The Dangers of Downloading Movies Illegally

Heather Wood
Downloading songs off of the Internet gave way to more intricate forms of pirating. Now, it is not uncommon for many people to attempt to and successfully achieve the download of a movie. Many times, these are movies that have not even been released from the theater to the video market yet. There is a high demand for these movies because individuals believe that they can get away with seeing these new movies for free and from the comfort of their own homes. In many instances, most people will even get away with this illegal downloading. However, now that authorities are cracking down on instances of pirating, we may be able to expect slightly more action against those who are using the Internet in order to obtain material that is under copyright without the express written consent of those involved. Also, it will be important to keep in mind that the individual that will be held responsible would be the owner of the IP address. This is because that is how the information is transferred. If a person lets someone else use their computer and they make downloads on that computer, the person who has the IP address registered to them will be the one to get contacted by authorities. Here are some of the penalties that people who download movies illegally may not be aware of:

1 - Many people may not know that if they are caught by the police or authorities for downloading movies illegally they will face monetary fines. The way that people are caught is that their IP address is traced back from a movie downloading instance. This means that they can be tracked over the computer at any point in time. It does not need to happen when they are doing the actual downloading. Some criminals in the past have been charged heavy fines for breaking the law in this manner. In most instances, the fines range from $750 and up. And that is per downloaded file, not a general fine for the downloading action.

2 - Schools are working with authorities in order to stop illegal downloading. This means that if an individual is in college and is using the schools Internet in order to download movies, the school will likely notice and report this download to authorities. This is because the school can be found liable as well and they do not want to be held responsible for a student's actions when it comes to downloading material that they should not be attempting to access. Some schools will not only charge their students or cut off their Internet access, but these students may even be kicked out of school or suspended as a result of their actions. The charges can add up very quickly, especially considering the fact that many students do not make an overabundance of money while they are attending to their education. With heavy fees for each download they completed, these students may no longer be able to afford going to school.

3 - In very severe cases, some individuals have been required to serve jail time. In most instances, however, the companies are looking to be financially compensated for the stolen receipt of their goods.

If you wish to access movies, your best bet is to go about it the legal way. Websites, such as iTunes, offers videos and movies as low as $1.99 and it is perfectly legal.
