The Dangers of Frostbite

Teresa Hoyt
Frostbite is a dangerous condition that can occur quickly if you do not take steps to protect yourself. Frostbite occurs when the skin and tissues form ice crystals because of the extreme cold. Your hands and feet are at greatest risk for frostbite because they are the farthest away from your heart. Any unprotected or poorly protected skin is at risk for frostbite.

There is a danger of frostbite anytime temperatures approach or dip below freezing. Extreme cold can lead to frostbite in seconds, or it may take several minutes for frostbite to occur. Children and older adults are at greater risk of frostbite and need to take special care to avoid the dangers of frostbite. The danger of frostbite is greater for people who smoke, drink alcohol or have certain medical conditions. People with diabetes and heart disease are at greater risk of frostbite. Any condition that results in poor circulation will increase the risk of frostbite.

To avoid frostbite cover exposed skin, wear gloves, hats and warm boots. Layers of clothing will help insulate your skin from the cold. To avoid frostbite make sure all clothing is warm and dry. Wet clothing will rapidly increase the danger of frostbite. Cotton is the worst fabric to wear as winter clothing as it will retain moisture.

If you experience frostbite, you will feel tingling, numbness and burning in the frostbitten area. If you suspect frostbite get inside to a warm place. Warm the cold areas gradually with warm water. Do not rub the areas that are frostbitten as this can damage the skin. Frozen tissue is very delicate. Never try to "warm" a frostbitten area by rubbing it with snow. This is an old wives tale and can cause serious damage to delicate injured skin.

If your skin is white, waxy looking and hard, seek medical attention immediately. Serious infection can set in if you have a bad case of frostbite. If there is any doubt whether you have frostbite, get it checked out right away. Frostbite can result in gangrene causing a loss of a limb and even death.

Fortunately, you can prevent frostbite by avoiding prolonged exposure to extreme cold and protecting yourself by covering exposed skin when you must go out. The danger of frostbite is a serious concern. Take care in cold weather.
