Ipecac is a syrup which is used to induce vomiting. It is only meant to be used in instances of accidental poisoning. Although many people attempt to use Ipecac among young children who have accidentally been poisoned, the truth is that it is much better to call the poison control center because children are more likely to drown in their own vomit. Unfortunately, nowadays, Ipecac is often abused by people who have an eating disorder called bulimia nervosa. They use Ipecac to make themselves vomit in order to lose weight. Many misconceptions among eating disorder patients believe that Ipecac is not a totally unhealthy way to lose weight.
What Are The Risks of Ipecac Abuse?
The truth in the matter is that, when Ipecac is abused, it can be extremely dangerous. While using Ipecac once when it is actually needed because a person has been poisoned, there are many dangers which are associated with Ipecac when it is used frequently or if you take more than you should. When you use Ipecac too often, it is known to have an effect on your heart - which can ultimately result in a heart attack or even death, in some cases. The famous Karen Carpenter's death is known to be associated with the abuse of this vomit inducer. Ipecac has also been known to have an effect on the overall appearance and health of your teeth, as vomiting too much is known to cause eroding. Although many people who abuse Ipecac may think that the risk of using Ipecac is only minimal, it is important to realize that Ipecac can result in death.
How Is Ipecac Purchased?
Though it can be purchased over the counter at most local drug stores, the restrictions are becoming stricter and stricter. Not only will most drug stores require you a reason for needing to buy Ipecac, but you will also need to provide photo id, and you will be limited to a certain amount of bottled of Ipecac monthly. Some drug stores are even beginning to require their customers to sign a release form when purchasing Ipecac. The main reason for such restrictions on Ipecac are the known number of people who have died from abusing the vomit inducing syrup.
What Should I Know About Taking Ipecac?
The most important thing that anyone who actually has the need to use Ipecac because of poisoning is that it is important to read the instructions. Taking the correct dosage is very important when it comes to Ipecac. Most importantly, you should never use this drug as a weight loss aid.
