The Dangers of Sunblock for Kids

Could Sunblock Cause More Harm Than Good?

While most parents believe that sunblock helps their kids, the dangers of sunblock for kids could be far worse than anyone has predicted. Applying sunscreen is a universal concept that everyone understands; most people believe it is vital to put sunscreen on their children to ensure sun rays do not harm them. However, sunscreen comes with dangers all of its own, especially when used on children. Parents should know the risks as well as the benefits.

Research Findings

The Environment Working Group is national organization that specializes in checking products commonly used in homes to make sure these products are not fatal or contain any toxins. After several years of testing sun protection products, this organization has found that out of the many sunblock products for kids available on the market, only 86% meet the standards for safety, stability, and effectiveness. Some sunscreen is dangerous for children and can come with grave consequences as severe as cancer, infertility, and even organ infections.

As stated before, out of the 783 sunblock products that were tested by the Environmental Working Group only found that 16% of them actually fit standards. What seems to be the most shocking aspect from these findings is the fact that the trusted brands most people buy due to frequent advertising were the ones said to be the most dangerous and hazardous to the body. Among these top brands were Banana Boat and Coppertone.

The Hazards of Sunblock for Children

Many major brands use chemical nanoparticles to make the products more potent. While it does that part of its job correctly, the particles can later be absorbed by the lungs and lead to the development of cancer. Also, most sunscreen products have been designed to block only the UVB rays that cause the skin to burn and tan. These products do not reach the standards for the blocking of UVA rays that can make skin to wrinkle as well as develop cancer. The chemicals used to prevent UVA rays become inert as soon as they come in contact with sunlight. This means that once your child is exposed to the sun, the sunblock will no longer work to protect his or her skin.

Safe Sunblock

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says that children as young as six months need to wear sunblock year round to prevent sunburn and lower the risk of skin cancer from sun exposure. There are some non-chemical sunblocks available that are safe to use. Some brands use titanium dioxide and zinc oxide that provide stability and may be safer to use.

Is it more than obvious why the hazards of sunblock for children are extremely prevalent. As a parent, you should think twice before picking up your favorite sunscreen bottle. Always research any brand of sunscreen before purchasing to prevent the dangers of sunblock for kids.
