'The Dark Tower' Heading to the Small and Silver Screens

Stephen King and Dark Tower fans alike can rejoice at Universal's latest undertaking: a TV and film adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower series. The project is being spearheaded by Ron Howard, Akiva Goldsman and Brian Grazer. It will be considered one of the largest cinematic undertakings since the Lord of the Rings trilogy. See the original article here.

Those of you who have read part or all of King's undertaking may be concerned about how Universal Studios plans to do justice to this big of an accomplishment, and that is exactly what has troubled the production trio behind the project. The ultimate conclusion is to do three major feature films supplemented by television episodes. The initial film would kick-start the series and be followed up by a season on television to lead ecstatic viewers into the next film. After the second film, another season would fill in the gap to the third and final film.

Stephen King fans and fans of the Dark Tower have long awaited a cinematic version of the incredible story, and have only been tantalized with images in movies like The Mist and by fan-made trailers and posters on the Internet. Finally it seems that a worthy team and a worthy plan have been initiated that will give The Dark Tower the same high-level treatment as the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

For those readers who haven't had a chance to enjoy the Dark Tower series, here is a brief summary. The story features the main character, Roland Deschain, last of a knightly order of gunslingers. Roland's world is an apocalyptic mirror of our own. With his powerful guns, we join Roland on his quest in the middle of the desert as he tracks the ominous Man in Black. Roland's quest will have the reader engaged in all seven of King's fantastic novels.

Full of symbolism as well as an insane amount of crossover into his other works, The Dark Tower series is not something to miss. If its film and television adaptations manage to do half of what the literary works have done, it will still be one of the most engaging and incredible books brought to life. Fans of the weathered gunslinger may get a whole new reason to saddle up and begin the quest when the movie finally heads to theaters.
