The Darker Side of Sci-Fi TV in 2011

Alice Clair Gunkee

The genre of science fiction TV is brought to life on TV using a lot of imagination and contains elements such as magicians, super heroes, and mystical powers. But some of these sci-fi shows show their darker side with aliens trying to take over Earth, devils and demons running rampant in our world, vampires sucking the life out of people and werewolves attacking anything in sight. These creatures all have to beware of special people that hunt them all to try to dispose of them. Here are my favorite 6 TV shows that showed the darker side of sci-fi TV in 2011.

FALLING SKIES (TNT)
(Summer)
One again the Earth is being attacked by aliens from outer space. This time Noah Wyle (ER, The Librarian) is leading the charge to take back our home planet from these new alien creatures known as Skitters and Mechs. The Skitters take control of human children by putting a 'harness' on them then controlling their movements and behavior through some sort of mental communication. The humans have finally found a way to safely remove the harness (or have they?) and return the retrieved children back to their parents.

SUPERNATURAL (CW)
Fridays @ 9:00pm
When their mother was killed by a demon when they were just little tykes, Sam and Dean Winchester's (Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles) father, John (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), took them with him on his demon hunting adventures tracking down the demon responsible for his wife's death. While their father was out hunting, Dean looked after Sam and learned the tricks of the trade along the way. As Dean got older he learned he gets premonitions of things to come and they're not always good. With their dad AWOL, they guys turn to long-time friend and supernatural hunter Bobby (Jim Beaver) for help and advice. In their hunt for the demon that killed their mother, the Winchester brothers have close encounters with vampires, demons, banshees, zombies, ghosts and even the devil himself.

VAMPIRE DIARIES (CW)
Thursdays @ 8:00pm (Fall/Winter)
Brothers Damon and Stefan Salvator (Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley) look like ordinary high school students on the outside, but they are really vampires living in an old family mansion in the small town of Mystic Falls. The brothers have fallen for the lovely Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) who also lives in Mystic Falls and is the spitting image of Katherine, a vampiress the brothers both loved in 1864. Other supernatural creatures also live in Mystic Falls. Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham) is Elena's best friend and also a witch, and Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino) is a werewolf, an arch enemy of vampires. "The Vampire Diaries" is based on the book written by L.J. Smith.

V (ABC)
(2009- 2011)
In a 1980s remake, the Visitors are back on Earth secretly trying to take it over. There is a rebel alliance forming of people who have learned the truth surrounding the V's but others are blinded by the technology and tricked by the human disguises the lizards wear. With too little too late attitudes being said of the action and little revealing of the lizards true skin underneath, and half the cast being offed in the first season finale, V was cancelled after its second season. Click here to check out some other human-looking aliens.

GRIMM (NBC)
Fridays @ 9:00pm (Fall/Winter)
The creatures from Grimm's Fairy Tales are walking among us disguised as real people. Only special people known as "Grimm's" can see these mythical creatures in order to track them down. Detective Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli) learns about his mythical powers when his aunt dies and leaves him her trailer full of Grimm creature history including weapons to fight them with and diaries full of insider information. Nick accidently befriends one of the creatures, who goes by the human name of Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell), and the two become uncomfortable allies.

TEEN WOLF (MTV)
Summers
You might recognize the names of the characters in this reboot of a classic film but that's when the similarities end as this show has a darker side than the original comedy. Teenager Scott McCall (Tyler Posey) is a high school Lacrosse player who mainly rides the pine until he discovers his secret identity and the fast, cat-like powers that come with being a teenage werewolf. Scott's best friend Stiles (Dylan O'Brien) is still by his side accompanying him in his daily adventures and occasionally covering for him when Scott accidently goes all wolf on him because he is still learning how to control his powers.
