The Darkness (PS3)

The Darkness is a first person shooter video game released for the Playstation 3 and developed by Starbreeze. The Darkness is based on the comic series of the same name. I can't comment on the discrepancies between the two medias as I know nothing about the comic series. Sorry.

Story : The game is a licensed one, meaning it's based on a franchise already. I'm not familiar with The Darkness, but it isn't required to know the comic series if you want to enjoy this game. I didn't know anything about the comic books and I still enjoyed the game very much.

Graphics : The graphics in this game are very amazing. The attention to detail is stunning. The details and textures of all the objects in the game are very realistic and show a ton of effort. All the characters are drawn beautifully and animated even better. The backgrounds and levels are quite immersive and fun to explore.

Sound : The they left no stone unturned when it comes to the music. It's composed beautifully and arranged well too. The music shifts from being very ambient to very catchy seamlessly. It fits the music like a properly sized glove. Even better is the sound design in the game, which is leaps and bounds above most other games. Every nuance is explored. Musically, this game is excellent. Even better still, the voice acting really takes the atmosphere of this game to the next level. Stunning.

Game play : The game starts out quite boring. You've got weapons, you fight people. Just like any other first person shooter. Soon enough though, you acquire Darkness abilities. This is where the game really offers a unique experience. You see, The Darkness isn't a metaphor. Your power actually grows stronger when it's dark, and eliminating light sources is part of the game. It's very unique and tons of fun. The versatility in this game is off the charts. You never get bored and there's a million ways to accomplish one thing.

Re playability : The game is great, no doubt about that. Replaying the single player mode is good enough and you shouldn't have any trouble with that. That bring us to the multi player, which is painfully average. Something just doesn't click here, everything is quite limited and overall just not enjoyable. It's a shame because this tarnished an otherwise near perfect game.

Overall : 8/10. A great first person shooter with average multi player.
