The David Copperfield Scandal

A. Dawn Gatton
In the restaurant where I work, there are several televisions situated around the dining room for the guests to enjoy. They generally play C-Span, weather, court TV, something informative. I'm usually so busy that I totally tune out the TV. Plus, I don't generally care what's on. However, last week for the first time ever, something floated down from the television set that literally stopped me in my tracks.

David Copperfield is being accused of rape.

I stopped what I was doing and stared up at the screen with my mouth open and my eyes welling up with tears. Later that night when the night shift waitress came on and I told her, SHE got choked up as well. I have adored David Copperfield every day of my life. He can do no wrong in my eyes. One of my farthest back and very most cherished memories is of being taken to one of his amazing shows and later getting to meet him AND his duck! It was maybe one of the top three best moments of my life! You think he's amazing on television? Try seeing him live. He truly is magic, there just can't be any other explanation.

And now someone would dare degrade the name of David Copperfield. For one thing, to me it seems that when a woman waits to report and alleged rape, especially for quite awhile, her credibility is automatically damaged. Why on earth if you do want to report a rape, would you wait until the evidence was gone? Why on earth would you want to wait to give the rapist opportunity to strike again? I'll tell you why, because she wasn't really raped and needed time to work out her story. He is one of the most gorgeous and wealthiest men alive. I just can't get my mind around the idea that he'd ever feel the need to resort to such a violent and unforgivable act. Although I prefer not to think of Mr. Copperfield, my childhood hero, in this regard, I just gotta think that the man gets more play than any ten rock stars... He's MAGIC for crying out loud.

As if this situation isn't revolting enough, today I saw fragments of a television show called, TMZ. The segment that I saw referred to message board comments on the TMZ website in which other women are coming forward to discuss David Copperfield's "creepy" behavior. They allege that on several occasions he had his female assistant bring women backstage and basically "interview" them on their likes and dislikes, where they like to vacation, what's their favorite perfume. They never mentioned this to any authorities before, but now they think it's CREEPY??? A stunning cazillionaire is showing interest in courting you and you're COMPLAINING? He wants to know what paradise vacation he could take you on or expensive gifts he could buy you? Oh, and did his female assistant have a GUN to your head while you sat there and voluntarily answered her questions? Bologna. What a crock.

Websites and television shows like TMZ are disgusting. Their sole purpose is to exploit and terrorize celebrities. There was actually a slide show on this website of various different celebrities picking their noses. How pitiful are the people who spend their days waiting for the perfect moment to take a picture of someone PICKING THEIR NOSE. Please.

How sad that any woman would select David Copperfield's life and career as her meal ticket. And now they'll be crawling out of the woodwork to cash in right along with her. The man is an icon. No one else like him has EVER walked the earth. Ladies, you should be ashamed of yourselves. You should have to apologize individually to every single rape victim on earth, because LIARS like you are the ones that make it hard for real rape victims to obtain justice.

We must have been watching this at the same time because I was just flabbergasted as to the allegations. I would think that rape would be the furthest thing from his mind with all the new tricks he tries to develop.

wow, i had the same reaction when i saw the news of 9/11. sort of incongruent, yeah?
you may want a new person to admire everyday of your life, it doesn't look good for D.Copp. "welling up with tears," give me a break.

Well tell EXACTLY how long she waited? There seems to be mixed versions of this story Apparently the she told her parents upon returning to the states...AND since HIS island is off the beatne track, a private plane or boat is required to return to Nassua where she could have reported this incident.

Regardless though, whether she reported it 30 minutes later OR 30 days later IF a crime was committed, it needs to be resolved and ONLY can be by our federal prosecutor!

Bottom line, hold your tears, Time will Tell. Of course you might find yourself crying more in the future for this fellow!
