The Day After Christmas Sales

How to Make Christmas Less Expensive

Ashby Koss
Everybody knows about the huge sales that follow Christmas day. These sales are everywhere fro 25% to 75% off certain or all items. The malls are packed with people buying things either with their own money or gift money. The lines for some stores are actually longer than the store is, leaving store workers busy and the floors cluttered.

Many people claim that Black Friday is the worst day to shop on but I disagree. The 1 to 2 days after Christmas are worse, these couple of days pack the malls and swarm the streets with shoppers with gift cards and newly acquired money. While many of these sales are very worth the time spent going to the mall. I am left wondering what would happen if people still held Christmas on the 25th but exchanged gifts on the 28th?

To me it makes sense, simple celebrate the meaning of Christmas on the 25th and give the gifts on the 28th. For many people this may be very possible, bu it all depends upon work schedule. Then again I may be doing nothing more than taking note on what some families already do. Either way if you can save the cash on the Christmas gifts why not change when your family gives the gifts. That does not mean that the day of Christmas would change, just simply the day that your family would trade gifts.

Not every family could do this, not only because of scheduling but also because of the market. If everyone did this the sales right before Christmas would shift to after Christmas. Companies would notice very quickly that they are not making the profit that they had before. This would prompt them to shift their sales, coupons, and advertisements to better serve their profit. This would then create the same environment we have now, with sales being after Christmas. This would help nothing, but if only some people use this then we are okay. As far as I can figure not everyone could or would do this, so it would be safe to assume that a shifting of gift days would be okay with everyone else not being able to shift and change due to tradition, family, schedules, or any other reasons.

Not only would this shift the cost of gifts and possibly reduce the amount of credit card usage, but it would also help distill the meaning of Christmas over gifts. With all of the gifts and the society pushing them as much as it is, the meaning behind Christmas was been blurred. By shifting the days around a bit the 25th of December is left open to truly be with family, friends, and loved ones. This is what Christmas is about, not the gifts. Recently I head an article about a gentleman that hung a Santa Claus on a crucifix to denounce the gift giving and speak out against the hype of the Christmas gifts. To this man I salute you, for your bold stand against the mainstream downward spiral of the Christmas meaning.

We should all aspire to bring as much meaning back into our homes as he did. Why not help your wallets while helping the meaning of Christmas. Theres no goo reason to by something at 25% off at a Christmas sale when you can save the money and buy it for 75% off, 2 days later at the after Christmas sale. It just makes common sense.
