The Day You Were Born

Erinn Soule
History says there is a memorable day in the month of May
we call that day Cinco de Mayo that happened in 1862.
Son, for me, it was in the month of May, 1998 at two.
Back in 1862, Mexico defeated the French in an unlikely win
with a battle so fierce, by an outnumbered troop. But in
1998, while battling labor pains, I defeated the baby war
and was awarded a precious bundle in blue, that bundle was you.

You were so tiny and new, the day would prove to be a happy one
for family, friends and my newborn son. I named you Joseph, Joe for short
I bet you didn't know that your name is also Jose, because you were born
on such a memorable Mexican day, with your blue eyes and pale blonde hair.

So when the flags are raised and the marches begin, smile and wave
and say, "That is my day too...today is my birthday"
