The Death Penalty Should Die!

We View the Lives of Others in Snapshots, but Our Own in Video

Tiffany Ranae
I used to be pro-death penalty. I figured, "If you can't do the time, don't do the crime."

Then about 3 years ago, a trip to the camera store changed my mind about all of that. "How?", you ask. Really it's quite simple:

Our lives are made up of video, and we hope people will judge us by the video of our lives rather than the worst of our snapshots. Yet, when it comes to others, we seem content to judge the content of character based on the very worst of snapshots. In other words, we are content to kill people for things that they did in brief moments of time and then we completely disregard all that came before and all that came afterwards. I think that is too random. I think that if we expect to be judged for the whole of who we are, that we should also apply the same principal in pronouncing judgment.

In addition, my opposition to the death penalty comes from the randomness of the sentencing. In other words, often times, the difference between a life sentence and a death sentence is the quality of your attorney. Is it any wonder that the minority populations make up the majority of Death Row inmates?

We live in a world where it is possible to contribute to society without participating in society. So do I believe in the death penalty? Sometimes I think death may be too kind. I believe, instead, in the Life Penalty.

  • The majority of Death Row inmates are minorities.
  • O'Henry wrote most of his short stories from jail.
  • The death penalty vs. the life penalty is usually about how good your lawyer is.

Have you noticed that a bunch of people in jail try to kill themselves and to others?? Why not suffer in jail for years and years than just a couple minutes in the death penalty? rather than suffering a little bit, they can suffer everyday of their lives for the crime that they made. A lot of things happen in jail but also a lot of things can happen to them.
i believe they shouldnt have the death penalty.

I'm doing a speach in Speach and Debate at my high school.
My topic is against the death penalty. While searching for reasons to support my decision, I came across this article...
And I must say that I was half and half untill I read it. But now I have to say that I'm 100% convinced that I made the right decision to get up in front of the class and convince everyone of them that the Death Penalty is immoral and wrong. IT is my opponion just like some others have their own oppinion and everyone's oppinions are equal. While I don't like paying for the creeps in jail, it would give me a sense of pride knowing that I handled the situation as a moral and decent person.
To the author: Thank you. I enjoyed the article.
To the opposers: Thank you. You make debating fun.

I hope that they keep the death penalty. it should be in place because maybe it will be strong enough to deterr murderers and if it is not, then they deserve the fate. if they don't mind doing the crime knowing the punnishment... why should we worry about it?

Why do we kill people, who kill pepole, to show that killing people is wrong?

  • detroit45_997/22/2006

I strongly feel that the death penalty is needed to justify the hope and protection of society's not so strong people.

I wonder, have you been to prison? Have you had the luxuries that many have had to sleep behind the bars at night, but then to wake up the next day and have RECREATIONAL time?! I thought growing up in a family w/3 correctional officers was just like living in prison because it was. I had a curfew that had to be met, cable that could be watched only after chores were done, & could go to the store to buy gum if I felt like it. If I disobeyed the rules, my privileges were docked. My feelings were temporarily hurt and life moved on. Likewise, prisoners have the same life! They can have visitors, like I had friends over. They can chill in front of the TV and play board games while waiting on others to finish chores. They get 3 meals a day provided they didn't make any officers angry and, unless they're in a harsh solitary unit, they have a decently comfortable bed to sleep in. A life sentence doesn't give a prisoner time to do anything but have fun and waste tax dollars. I thi

I beleave that the death penalty is indeed too kind for some. They are set free of thier guilt or crime by death and do not have the time to think about what they did for a lifetime. On the other hand, why do life sentences give so much to the prisoner that they may have taken away from someone else?
