The Death of Wavy Gravy Ice Cream

Remembering One of My Favorite Ice Cream Flavors

Lisa Stevens
I've noticed something about Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream; they seem to take away only the best of the best flavors when you really don't want them to take them away.

This happened with their Wavy Gravy line, it was single handedly the best mix of flavors I had ever had in ice cream before and then suddenly it was all taken away. Just thinking about the ice cream makes me drool. It had just the right mix of caramel, cashew's and Brazil nut's. Mixed all together with vanilla ice cream the stuff was just heaven. I would find myself buying 3 at a time and saving them as long as I could in the freezer, needless to say I absolutely loved it.

The origins of Wavy Gravy ice cream are pretty simple. The ice cream was named after 60's hippie and clown icon Wavy Gravy aka Hugh Romney who has had the distinction of mc'ing all 3 Woodstock's and also runs Camp Winnarainbow in an area outside of Laytonville, California which is about a 3 hour drive north of San Francisco. The money Wavy would receive from the sales of the ice cream would go directly to his camp to help fund scholorships for homeless and under privilaged children who lived in the Bay Area. The children were given the chance to enjoy a few weeks during the summer in the wilderness with kids their own age.

But somewhere along the line Ben and Jerry decided the ice cream wasn't making the kind of sales it once was and decided to discountinue the line around 2003. I haven't seen it around here since 2000 though, but 7 years later I still have great memories of this amazing concoction. I really can't sing it's praises enough and anyone who missed trying this really missed out.

Another favorite I have found though is Phish Food which is dedicated to the band Phish who have used the proceeds from the sale of the ice cream for The WaterWheel Foundation which the band founded in 1997 to oversee their charitable activities. Initially, the Foundation included The Touring Division, The Giving Program, and the Lake Champlain Initiative. As the band has stopped touring though The Touring Division and the Giving Program are now defunct. The Lake Champlain Initiative continues to donate proceeds from the sale of Phish Food to support the environmental well-being of Lake Champlain and its watershed.Ben and Jerry's likes to add certain names or bands to it's ice cream flavors and give back as much as they can in the sale proceeds to the charity of the honoree's choice. This is a great way for the company to give back while allowing multiple charities to benefit from the sales.

But I still can't help but feel a little sad for the flavors that have gone to the great Ben and Jerry graveyard such as S'mores and Urban Jumble, both of which were just as good as Wavy Gravy.

If you ever get a chance to try Ben and Jerry's ice cream flavors, remember to savor them because they could be here today and just as easily gone tomorrow.

Can I just have the recipe so I can buy the closest thing to it? Never in my life have I loved any ice cream so much. One of the questions of compatibility with my husband was what our favorite ice cream was......we both answered....wavy gravy. That's something!!!

Well the company was sold awhile back so it probably have become more corporate then the way Ben and Jerry ran it, its a shame.

If B and J are not going to bring back Wavy Gravy they should make the recipe available to all us who loved this ice cream. Their best. I had Nutella for the first time the other day and immediately knew this was what was in Wavy Gravy. It sure reminded me of it right away. FREE the RECIPE !!!!!!

Wavy gravy was the best, hands down. As soon as it disappeared I dropped B&J totally. 'Course their leftard politics also caused me to drop 'em.

I loved this flavor dearly, and decided not to buy any more Ben and Jerry's after they discontinued (I was a 2-4 pint per week customer). Wavy Gravy was the BEST flavor. The ice cream was cashew/brazil nut, the swirl was hazelnut fudge, and then the chocolate covered almonds. Out of this world! I've been trying to duplicate the recipe at home - getting close, but not quite there yet. If B & J's does start making this again (long term basis, in grocery stores - none of this "available-for-one-month-only-in-our-scoop-shops" crapola), I will buy my weight in Wavy Gravy ice cream at least once a week (of course, my weight would be INCREASING with each week, so that in itself should be an incentive for them, no?) There is an actual Bring Back Wavy Gravy FB page - hey, let's all join!
