The Decline of the Human Population

Human Replacement Levels Are Dangerously Low

Judy (Montelauro) Harrell
In spiteof those who insist on persisting to believe in the 60's theory that our planet is over populated, the fact is that if everyone had a 2x2 foot plot to stand on, you could fit the entire world's population in Jacksonville Florida. . There are 22 billion square feet in Jacksonville Florida. More land was transformed to agriculture since 1945 than in both the 18th and 19th Centuries.

We used to be told we are consuming too much now we are being told we are growing too much!

Another well-kept secret according to "Evergreen" magazine is that more trees are growing in our nation's forests than at any time since the early 1900's which is still two-thirds the size of what it was when the Pilgrim first landed in America.

People are having fewer and fewer children in Europe and may not be able to replace themselves. In other words in order for a countries population to remain stable, the average woman in a complex manufacturing society must have 2.1 children in her life time.

According to the United Nations report 61 countries, and all of Europe are experiencing below replacement birth rates.

So much for the population explosion scare tactic designed to dehumanize our society and make our youth feel devalued. My belief is that there are evil forces behind this population explosion myth designed to undermine our humanity.

Japan is offering incentives to reverse the falling birthrate. A toy company in Japan is offering its employees $10,000 for every baby born after their second child. Other incentives include making it more economical to raise children by family leave, child care, extending flexible work hours and offering cash incentives. Japan is concerned that declining birth rates and aging population with halt economic growth. If a country like Japan that is technologically further advanced than the United States is offering incentives for more children, then why can't we see that there is a problem? Have our politicians blinded us to the truth? Is our country just too self absorbed and materialistic to see the value of raising children.

Currently in mainland China on young person supports an average of four elderly.

A voluntary organization, "The Population Foundation of India" working in association with the Union government notes that 15% of the population will be over the age of 65 by 2051.

In Indiabetween 2011 and 2016 the number of children per woman is predicted to come down to 2.52 and expected to go down to 2.1 by 2026.

Due to four successive years of declining birth rates, Italy is the only country in Europe that people over 65 out number those under age 15. The regional and national government in Europe has begun developing economic motivations for families to have more children. Among those incentives are insurance that is paid in full when a baby is born, or child financial support for middle and low income families. In Northern Italy, a flood of immigrants have been attracted to work in Italy's factories.

On November 15, "The Toronto Sun" reported that "natural-born Canadians are becoming an endangered species," with the Canadian fertility rate at an all-time low. The article predicted that "annual deaths could equal or surpass births as early as 2020."

A significant eventafter the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union that has for the most part gone unnoticed is Europe's population decline.

There will be long term consequences on Europe's relations with its Middle Eastern and North African neighbors. The decline of Europe's population will not only have a global impact but it will also have a dramatic effect on European society, and, its economy, especially due to the diminishing work force.

Before researching this subject I wrote a poem entitled "The population Explosion Myth" but did not realize at that time how true my words were. It is time for us to sit up and take notice. All we need is one really bad epidemic and we may not be able to recover. Our society worries so much about animals going extinct (which is good), however, how many of us realize what is happening to our world's human population.
