The Detroit Tigers Think They Are the New York Yankees

The Detroit Tigers made another splash in the free agency market this off-season when they signed catcher Victor Martinez to a four-year deal worth $50 million.

The problem with this is apparently the Tigers management is suffering an identity crisis and thinks they are the New York Yankees.

Tigers' management seems content on giving away first round draft selections in exchange for offering up high end contracts to players who are past their prime.

Yes, Martinez is still a player who can contribute by hitting around .300 with 20 homeruns and driving in 90 runs.

He is perfect on a team that is has a vast array of hitters who can out slug the opposing team on any given night.

The Tigers are not that team.

While he is going to add some protection to one of the best hitters in the game, Miguel Cabrera, the Tigers need to make the decision how much he will play at catcher or at the DH spot, which is already crowded.

The best thing the Detroit Tigers could do is to follow the lead of the Minnesota Twins.

This team has stay away from bringing in high priced talent in exchange for bringing up players from the farm system and developing them to play a brand of ball that fits their team.

And it has worked.

The Twins have won six AL Central titles since 2002.

The Tigers should be more concerned about building up a depleted farm system that Dombrowski has pillaged since coming here.

Until Tigers' ownership realizes that opening up their wallets will not solve their problems, the baseball team is going to continue to disappoint.
