The Devil is in the Details: Why Doing Something Bad Feels Good

Iago
From the beginning of time there have always been two opposing forces. There can't be a Creator without a Destructor. The Devil has always received a bad wrap throughout history, but if you examine the details it may bring new meaning to the question "Why does doing something naughty feel so good?

Pablo Picasso said "Every act of creation is first an act of destruction". Witnessing children painting or playing is a prime example of this creation/destruction scenario. I guess that's why we call them little devils from time to time.

Keeping the universe balanced properly is no easy task. There is something between opposing forces that can't be sensed without understanding. A beautiful spring is made brighter and more welcomed by a harsh winter. Likewise, the soothing calm of silence is never more anticipated and appreciated then after a terrible storm. What would the Star Wars Saga be without Darth Vader or Batman without the Joker? For every protagonist there is an antagonist waiting to balance the other out. It's not always about who the clear cut winner is, but how the game is played.

Every balance sheet has debits, credits, assets and liabilities all of which must balance out. Can you have too much of a good thing? You bet, just ask any municipality that is left with a surplus at the end of a fiscal year. A surplus of public funds sounds good but it really reflects over taxing and mismanagement of funds. Taxpayers will crawl out of the woodwork insisting they have been overtaxed for lack of a public benefit and demand a refund.

We live with opposing forces in our bodies every day. An imbalanced diet leads to improper ph levels in your body which over time contributes to various diseases. Your body can be too acidic or too alkaline neither of which contributes to healthy living. Eating too many fruits and vegetables while neglecting proteins and grains may negatively affect your ph balance reducing your life expectancy. So go ahead and indulge in your favorite fatty food as long as it's done in moderation and it's balanced out with healthy foods.

Examples of this can be found in studies by The Wolfe Clinic http://www.thewolfeclinic.com/phbalancearticle.html which states that "The bodies ph, or acid-alkaline, balance is the most important aspect of balanced and healthy body."

Next time you're feeling a little devilish just realize your balancing out some good that likely has been long overdue. Being devilish in moderation enables us to be honest with our instincts while shedding the Puritan rituals drilled into our heads as children via fear of God tactics. It takes a lot of work to be good or perfect all of the time. And it may make you sick to strive for perfection. Once you leave your goody two shoes persona behind, you always feel a gush of liberation soothing your soul. There is a primal need to break free from conventional norms even if it means sprouting some horns from your head and adding a little balance to your life.
