The Devil's Chant: A True Scary Story

J P Whickson
It was late that night, or perhaps early the next morning would be a better description. I'm a writer, and my days and nights get turned around, since the muses seldom decide to visit at preordained hours. My office is in a slightly renovated basement, complete with painted walls. It is a large Michigan cellar, and if you don't know the term, it simply means there is a ledge all the way around. It comes complete with assorted bugs that somehow make their way in and sit waiting on the carpeted floor. At 1 a.m. it is more than just a little spooky if you take the time to really look around. The windows have a few clinging vines and as homey as you try to make it, it is still a basement.

I was searching for combinations of words that would get the most requests from a search engine. Somehow I clicked on the wrong item on my word tracker. A television screen came up; it was Urge. That was odd. Across the screen pentagrams danced in various colors and I heard a chant. My God! I had contacted the devil. Wait, this can't be, I am not the subject of a horror tale. I tentatively clicked one more time. Yes, it was a chant and the ever-dancing pentagram swirled before me. A spell was being cast and it was my very soul that the evil one wanted.

I immediately closed out the Urge link, or at least tried to. Wait, my screen froze....The swirling pentagrams continued before me. I could feel my heart pounding as I desperately tried to shut down this evil one. Finally, Microsoft attempted to come to my rescue by telling me that the program wasn't responding. No kidding, the Devil is controlling it, why would it respond. I shut down the computer, there was no hesitation...I didn't care if I lost the material or not. I ran up the stairs, leaving the lights on, but not caring. The bed was waiting, with another human in it, the human that would protect me from the spell.

This morning I was told that I had left the lights on in the basement overnight. "Oh my gosh. I must have forgotten to turn them off." I coyly responded. I would never tell him that there was an evil spell attempting to take my soul.

After he left for work I knew that I had to start mine. The memory of the video haunted me all morning. I finally went back to the keyword combination tracker. I could not find the screen from the night before. It was a supernatural event.

Several hours of work later, I had to find another set of keywords. As I input several combinations, a screen popped up. It was the screen that you verify letters to show that you are not a machine, stealing their ideas. There at the bottom of the screen, beneath the letters was small lettering. "Phonetic Spelling." I clicked on it. The screen came up, this time I could hear what it said, and I could decipher the new chant from the Devil. It said Z B M N as the pentagram swirled. Wait, ZBMN were the letters that I needed to type for verification....Oh, now I get it. This was an audio verification for the visually impaired. The Devil had nothing to do with it. Ooops, well, maybe I'm not the "Chosen One." and maybe, I've watched one too many scary movies.

You had me scared as hell all the way through waiting for the devil to get my computer- then I laughed so hard in relief at the end- thanks for the fright, really had my heart racing :)

LOL and Brrr. Good one, I enjoyed. I did once have a true similiar happening except a red radiation sign came up. It still scared the devil out of me. Turns out it was an evil pc virus. I had to pay a pc tech to remove it. Every time I turned my pc on, the red radiation sign was there. Scared me. Maybe...it was the devil...hehe, in human form, of course. Right? Right? It sure defied all virus protection. Whew. Happy Halloween!
