The Diet Pill Quandry

Jennifer Hammitt

She sat alone at her kitchen table. Another weekend was over, and she was looking to the week ahead.

She was sick of being the caretaker. Her "great personality" would only get her so far. She yearned to be like the other girls. So first came the diet. Then came the exercise. Still it wasn't nearly enough. She had a few options left. She sat looking at the bottle sitting on the table. She had been down this road before.

The jitters and the paranoia were the first steps. Then came the racing heart. Her hands would shake, and her usually short attention span would get even shorter. If she drank too much coffee, it could set her into a frenzy. Overtime, she would just become moody and irritable. She would stop sleeping. She would become a monster.

The question remained: Would it be worth it? Would finally having a chance to be like the other girls be worth the costs? The one thing she wanted was possible, but could she pay the price?
