The Differences Between a Crew Cab, Extended Cab and a Standard Cab Pickup Truck

Mich Butler
Are you thinking of buying a pickup truck? You need to consider what size cab you want. If you are taking a lot of people with you for most of your travels, you need to have places for the people to sit. If you don't take a lot of people with you then it is not a consideration for you so stick to a standard size pickup truck.

The crew cab pickup truck is the largest cab you can get on a pickup truck. It doesn't matter if it is a Chevy, Ford or GMC, you can find a crew cab pickup truck for any of these makes of trucks. The crew cab pickup truck is made to have four doors and two bench seats that fit six adults comfortably. If you get a crew cab that has a stick shift on the floor you can still get six adult into the truck but the fellow in the center of the front seat may have less leg room. A crew cab pickup truck is the right choice if you travel with four or more people. The down side of a crew cab pickup truck is that it does not have the best traction. Crew cabs have long wheel bases making it easier to slide or get stuck.

The extended cab pickup truck also comes in many makes like Chevy, Ford or GMC. It only has two doors and it is not as comfortable for several passengers as the crew cab pickup truck is. The extended cab pickup truck has a smaller wheel base then the crew cab so it has better traction then the crew cab but it has less then a standard pickup truck has. The back seat can be smaller then a crew cab pickup truck. It can be a bench seat or two seats. An extended cab is okay for hauling children but adults may not find it as comfortable as a crew cab.

The crew cab pickup truck costs more then a extended cab pickup truck does but you can find a crew cab that does not have many options for about the same price as an extended cab pickup truck with options. The extended cab costs more then a standard size pickup truck. Naturally you pay for the bigger size. Gas mileage is better on a standard size pickup truck then the extended or the crew cab.

You can find crew cab, extended cab and standard pickup trucks with a short box or a standard size box. They are also found in one ton, three quarter ton, or half ton.
