One of the deadliest diseases in the Philippines today is diabetes. It ranks number 9 as far as deadly diseases go. It currently affects 4 million Filipinos which includes children that are as young as 7 years of age. Years ago, the common age in the Philippines to be afflicted with this disease was 40 years of age and it is terrifying to think that that number has dropped significantly over the years.

One study group in the Philippines decided to conduct an experiment regarding diabetes. It was a 30 day program where people who had diabetes signed up. Their weight and blood sugar was recorded for each person. They educated them on the right foods to eat and to exercise every day. The study group also had each person drink a bitter melon herbal medicine. It was a good influence on all participants as they were not aware how bad their eating had been. It inspired them to make changes in their lives. Let us take a look at the different types and symptoms of diabetes.

There are currently three types of diabetes that people suffer from. The first one is called type 1diabetes or what is also known as childhood or juvenile diabetes. This unfortunately is a disease that a person will have it's entire life. It seems to start when the person is young hence the name. This particular type of diabetes can occur when the body does not create insulin or is unable to create enough insulin. Type 1 diabetes symptoms can include urinating often, having thirst that is intensified, loss of weight, pain in the stomach, vision that appears blurred and feeling drained.

The second type of diabetes that people suffer from is called type 2. This has also been called maturity onset or adult onset diabetes. Type 2 diabetes happens when the person with this condition becomes what they call insulin resistant. This means that the body is able to produce insulin but is not able to identify it. Therefore, it does not know what to do with it. Symptoms of type 2 diabetes can include urinating more than normal, large appetite, feeling nauseous or lack of feeling in the feet or hands.

The third type of diabetes is what they call gestational diabetes. This typically comes about when a woman is pregnant and is unable to generate a decent amount insulin that is needed. The symptoms of gestational diabetes can consist of vision that is blurry, large appetite and being thirsty.
