The Difficulties of the Philippine Lesbian Society

Lesbianism Has It's Own Struggles Abroad

Karla Barker
In a Catholic country such as the Philippines, there are issues that are continually being debated such as the Philippine lesbian society. The Philippine lesbian culture is to some extent acknowledged, but is not widely accepted. The Gay society is much more welcome among society than the Philippine lesbian culture. There is still work to be done to make the Philippine lesbian culture a welcomed culture in the Philippine society.

The Philippine lesbian culture is very open among the Philippine society

Simply saying that Philippine lesbian culture is visible among the public would be an understatement. The lesbian society has a unique way to create awareness and exist within the Philippine society. Philippine lesbian cultures are a bit more discreet compared to the gay's culture in the Philippines. However, lesbians do not compromise their personal style due to the society. Lesbians in the Philippines make their own statement by having shorter hairstyles, which is a common feature among the Philippine lesbian culture. Lesbians in the Philippines also wear clothing to make a statement in public such as a tomboy or boyish appearance consisting mostly of wearing jeans and T-shirt. The Philippine lesbian culture wants to make sure that their existence is obvious.

Being part of the Philippine lesbian culture is a struggle
The lesbian society's words and opinions are not taken seriously in the public eye. Being a lesbian sometimes raises family issues and lesbianism is not welcomed in some public establishments. The Philippine lesbian culture finds it hard to belong as in many other cultures. Sometimes, their own family denies them for their sexual preference or friends are lost due to their choice of lifestyle. Most workplaces in the Philippines are strict with their dress code and major religions haven't acknowledged the lesbian society in public. This is a hindrance to the Philippine Lesbian culture to express themselves and be free with their lifestyle. The struggle can result in traumatic experiences and bruised self-esteem among many women. These women conceal the pain and rejection with a defensive and unaffected approach, which can make the Philippine Lesbian culture appear arrogant. The Philippine Lesbian culture has been mistakenly accused as being unfriendly, close-minded, and most of all, mentally and emotionally unfit. Instead of being bitter, the resilience of the Philippine lesbian culture takes those criticisms as inspirations and challenges. They motivate themselves to be useful and cheerful to protect the Philippine lesbian culture's disposition.

Philippine lesbian culture is starting to become more recognized

Despite of the thought that the Philippine Lesbian culture is insipid, people are starting to notice of their chosen lifestyle. The contributions of the Philippine Lesbian culture are starting to be noticed and have been creating more of an awareness among the Philippines straight society. Little by little, the Philippine Lesbian culture conquers the judging eyes of the majority through the help of the sprouting liberated mindset of media, corporate world and private groups. They are beginning to build their unique reputation something where the gay community has succeeded at already.
In these modern times, the Philippine lesbian culture continues to struggle for their identity and rights within the society. The Philippine society gives the lesbian community their own space; however, the human rights of the Philippine lesbian culture are dishonored. The key to the social acceptance for the Philippine lesbian culture relies on education, awareness and understanding.

I don't see, except that the Phillipines may be Catholic oriented, how this is much different than Lesbian culture anyplace else. Plus, I'm surprised you used the phrase the "choice of lifestyle." No one chooses to be homosexual.

Good topic! It was hard to read though, with the same phrase "Philippine lesbian culture" being repeated so often. I know you're going for keywords, but there is such thing as too much. JMHO :)

It's sad that we all can't just accept one another. Great insight.
