The Disadvantages of Dating a Neighbor

S. Ann
For many people, dating a neighbor seems to be a wonderful idea. There is something terribly alluring about the thought of a lover and partner so near your doorstep, available to you whenever you may wish or desire. It is a comforting thought, and not a bad one to entertain. Life is hard enough; dealing with it alone can become too taxing.

However, one must be cautious about indulging the imagination in this way, for the experience of millions of people has shown us that relationships often do not end well. When you date a neighbor, you risk a loss of your privacy, a loss of your security, and a general loss in your peace of mind - especially if the relationship ended on a violent or semi-violent note.

When a dating relationship with a neighbor ends, many things can happen. Unfortunately, very few of them are desirable. It is entirely possible that your ex-boyfriend or ex-girlfriend will simply move on and get on with life, and in many cases this does happen. Of course, in an equally great number of cases, one or both partners are unable to get on with their lives. A break-up can be traumatic in more ways than one, and often keeps one or both partners wishing for reconciliation.

If both partners want reconciliation, there is no issue. However, if only one of the partners want to get back together, and the other is against it, then problems begin to arise. The former may begin taking actions that threaten or disturb the latter in an effort to restore their relationship. In many cases, such an effort leads to something drastic, such as physical violence.

Because they are physically weaker, this problem is much more acute for women than it is for men. Countless women have experienced being hounded by men in one way or another - and very few them like it. Most other times, women are scared of what seems like male insanity, and would like to avoid it. However, if the men are question are neighbors, it simply becomes impossible to do this. Instead, because of the geographical proximity involved, women are forced to endure all forms of abuse - physical, mental, and emotional.

Before anyone enters a relationship with a neighbor, one must first think on these things. Again, dating a neighbor is very easy to do. But once you're caught up in it, it might be very difficult to back out. Instead of wasting your time and energy extricating yourself from a bad situation, do yourself a favor and don't get into it in the first place.
