The Disadvantages of the Wrong Bra Size

How Should My Bra Fit?

J.A.S.
The tell-tale signs of improper bra fit vary from woman to woman. Here are a few examples of how to tell if your bra is the wrong size.

Muffin Tops- The result of improper cup size. Muffin tops occur when the breast is squeezed into a cup that is entirely too small, resulting in a bulge over the top of a bra. If you know that you have muffin tops, then everyone knows you have muffin tops. You may need to increase your cup size to solve this problem.

"Hiked" Up- This is the look you get when your bra arches up your back. The back band of your bra should lay across your back just below your shoulder blades. You can try to fix this by adjusting your straps. If the problem still persists, you may need a new bra.

Skin Whelps- Can be the result of straps not being adjusted or the bra being too small. After a while, small whelps or lines form where the bra strap has been hugging the skin tightly for an extended period of time. Discomfort may be experienced by pain where the whelps are produced, or you may feel an itching or burning sensation. These whelps can also lead to permanent scars that are difficult to remove. Try adjusting your bra straps first, otherwise you should get check that you have the correct bra size.

Wire Poking- Under-wire bras should not poke into your skin. This can result if the bra is the wrong size, or excessively worn. If the wire has came through the fabric of the bra, remove the wires from both cups (if necessary) or toss the bra. This can also lead to permanent scarring. If the wire has not came through the fabric, but irritates you, your bra may be the wrong size.

Sagging Bra- Your bra is offering you zero support if you are sagging in it. Your breasts should be up and almost at attention, regardless of your bra size. Wearing a sagging bra is like wearing no bra at all. Start by adjusting your bra straps. If that doesn't work, you need to double check for the correct size, or get refitted.

Empty Cups- If your bra cups are gathered, loose, of if there is space between your breasts and the cup itself, then the cup is too big.

Bra Wallet- You should not be able to stuff miscellaneous items into your bra cups! This can damage the bra itself and decrease the life of your bra. Depending on the size and quantity of the items inserted, you may also have empty cups and just don't realize it! A few folded dollars can't hurt, but your bra is not the place for your cigarettes, lighter, etc...

Weight Gain or Loss- In the event of excessive weight gain or weight loss, you may need to check your size to ensure your bra is fitting correctly.

Your bra should feel comfortable. Many of these problems listed are not only noticeable to you, but others as well. You can get a better idea of how your bra fits by undressing and checking in the mirror for any of the above listed signs of an improper bra fit.

You should check your bra size yearly. Your bra size can change with weight gain or loss, or even as we age and lose elasticity in our breasts. Take care of yourself!
