The Dismantling of America's Historical Heritage

Carolyn R Scheidies
Few dispute that America's founding father's based our system of government on Judeo-Christian principles. Out of this came our motto, our anthem, verses carved in stone on America's government buildings, chaplains who open congress with prayer, any number of monuments depicting Judeo-Christian elements such as the Ten Commandments along with mention in many state constitutions.

Yet, today some organizations, as well as too many government officials and representatives have made it their goal to completely divorce American culture from our historical, cultural and spiritual heritage and our roots.

Despite America's heritage, many government documents are censored when they mention God or a supreme being. Court cases against municipalities have removed statures and monuments with Judeo-Christian themes. The rights of America's communities are trampled in the name of "separation of church and state" a Thomas Jefferson misused quote. Does separation of church and state really mean destroying our heritage and rewriting history? That's what's happening.

Our money says "In God We Trust" yet not only are our children not allowed to pray in school, they aren't even allowed to learn the truth about their heritage--if they're taught accurate historical facts at all.

Russia long ago declared religion out-moded, old fashion and basically and, for all purposes, outlawed it. Yet, the government did not tear down all the magnificent cathedrals or many other icons of Russian heritage of spiritual history. Even in the violence and destruction of the rule of the czar and a free government, the communist government (eventually) saw beyond the spiritual significance of these buildings, statues and monuments to the historical value...their very real heritage.

China, with a communist government firmly in control, has not wiped out all statues and monuments and sacred sanctuaries of their history...a spiritual heritage which goes back thousands of years.

Surely those governments can't be said to sponsor religion? Then why do many organizations in America, and all-too-many judges, fear the mention of God, even in the historical setting of America's spiritual heritage? How can we allow them to twist the laws to their own purposes, effectively wiping out the history and heritage of our nation?

It doesn't take more than one person--one person--to bring suit saying, "I'm uncomfortable" and community standards, along with our historical, cultural and/or spiritual heritage, go out the window. In case you think this trend stops with our spiritual historical heritage, think again.

Cases are being brought against schools and organizations who wish to recite America's pledge of allegiance or even fly our flag...after all, it may make a person from another culture or country uncomfortable. What about America's historical heritage, about giving our children positive roots to their historical, cultural and/or spiritual heritage?

How long before having a cross on your lawn or the flag on a shirt ends up in court? Oh, that's right, this has already happened. How long before lawsuits are brought for waving our flag? While our military fights for our freedom in other parts of the world, our freedoms in our own land are not-so-slowly being eroded. It is more important now than ever to let our government leaders know we stand for the freedom to display the symbols of our heritage, our tradition and our culture without government interference.

If we don't stand up, our children and grandchildren will lose their rich historical, cultural and spiritual heritage, and with it what it truly means to be an American.

I agree and now the government is suing the Salvation Army for requiring their employees to speak English. English is our language. This is such an abuse of power over a private organization.
