The Disturbing Dangers of Excess Fluoride in Tap Water

Pam Parent
For decades fluoride has been added to tap water. Tooth decay dropped drastically among children born after the fluoride was added. Fluoride can also be found in most toothpastes, mouthwashes and other products. Unfortunately, the abundance of fluoride in tap water and other fluoride products may be harmful. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency plan to lower the amount of fluoride added to tap water. There are disturbing dangers linked to being exposed to the excess fluoride in tap water.

Thyroid Gland Malfunction

Being exposed to excess fluoride in tap water may reduce the function of the thyroid for those who have an iodine deficiency. When the thyroid isn't fully functioning, it can lead to loss of mental alertness, weight gain or depression.

Risk for Bone Cancer

A recent study from a team of Harvard scientists found that there was a connection between fluoride and a serious form of bone cancer, otherwise known as osteosarcoma, in males under the age of 20. The National Toxicology Program stated that the link between fluoride and this type of bone cancer is "biologically plausible."
Up to half who are diagnosed with this type of bone cancer die within a few years from when they were first diagnosed.

Excess Fluoride May Lower the Ability of the Pineal Gland to Function Properly

The pineal gland in part of the brain tissue that is located between the two hemispheres of the brain. Researchers discovered through the study of animals that excess fluoride can lower the functioning ability of the pineal gland to produce melatonin. This may shorten the time it will take to reach puberty. There was a study done of a fluoridated community and a non-fluoridated community of girls. Studies showed that the girls in the fluoridated community started menstruating five months earlier that those in the non-fluoridated community.

Dental Fluorosis

Dental fluorosis is a condition found in children, and one of the most common problems linked to excess fluoride. This condition forms spots or streaks on children's teeth. This condition can also have a negative impact on tooth enamel.
