The Dixie Grill Restaurant

A Touch of South in the Islands

Alyssa Branen
If your looking for a little bit of the south on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu, look now further than The Dixie Grill in Aiea. With it's some what tacky, yet charming atmosphere it is definitely a unique place to visit. From customers screaming every time someone rings the bell and claims that someone has ordered a "Screamin mai tai", to the signs on the restroom doors bearing pig names instead of male and female. You will definitely have an interesting meal. One of my favorite things to order off of the menu was a Savannah Chicken Sandwich with a side order of Soy Beans. My husband enjoyed ordering a bucket of crabs legs and the ribs that came with about five or six different flavors of barbecue sauce to pour on them. Pulled pork, ribs, steak and chicken dishes are all great at this restaurant. Another favorite is the meatloaf sandwich. You can never go wrong with a meatloaf sandwich and a side of fries. The "Screamin Mai Tais" are very popular, so bring your earplugs. I really believe that it is the crab legs brings people in. I took my mother there when she came out to visit from Maine. She ordered the fried chicken. She said it was very good, but the portions were a little big.

There is something very interesting about this place I haven't mentioned yet. I can't speak of what may be located in the mens room, as I have never been in there. However, when you enter the women's room, you have to do a double take and go back out and read the sign on the door, because they have a male dummy set up in front of a fake urinal on the wall. It tricks me every single time I walk in there. You would think I would be used to it by now. Definitely a funny joke. Maybe a bit tacky, but I get a kick out of it.

I have always had good service at this establishment. The waitresses love children and are always very friendly. It is a great place to bring children. There is even an outside section with picnic tables and a little sandbox play area for them to play in while you wait for your food. The only downside is that the parking lot is very, very crowded. There is extended parking out back but it is often still hard to manage finding parking. You may have to circle a few times before you find a place to park. All in all though, it is good eats at a decent price.
