On Saturday & Sunday, August 29 and 30, 2009, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is hosting its annual Festival of World Cultures. The two days are jam-packed with activity to stimulate, teach, delight, and inspire. It is almost overwhelming all that can be experienced in this typical Irish town this weekend!
Included are concerts, art exhibitions, storytelling hours, workshops, fairs, circuses, performances, marketplaces, etc. You name it, its in Ireland this weekend. From Brazilian dance to the children dances of Soweto, oriental dans, the dances of the Rajasthan gypsies, the Louisiana Six, Mexican folk dance and song, Art On The Railings, Bollywood Disco, Danú, Feast Americana, flamenco, et al. Even the islands are not left out. There is Fijian dance and music, Indonesian dance, and an Irish Céilí band. Some events are ticketed and some are free.
This is Ireland's largest celebration of all the different worlds that have come to its shores in the last twenty years and that are quickly changing what it means to be Irish. It is large in any location and nearly encompasses a taste of everything that can be found on this beautiful planet and thought of by its even more beautiful people.
Next year the DLR Festival of World Cultures will be held for three days instead of two, July 23 - 25, 2010. Make note of the dates and make plans to attend.
