The DMOZ Factor

Like two faces of the same coin, the positive and negative lights about DMOZ have been discussed by many of them on different forums. You will be surprised if I tell you that Google, the most commonly used search engine still uses DMOZ as its back up directory source. It is important to have your site listed in its index till the trend changes. If you have quality link then, there are narrow chances that you can get top rankings in Google without being listed in DMOZ.

Coming to the time factor, it is obvious you cannot spend a lot of time in getting a DMOZ link, Just 15 minutes is more than enough to get yourself set. To submit your site and get listed you can opt from the two ways. One would require some research where in you will have to find a category your site falls into and enter it there and the other is by categorizing regionally where your business is located. Then look for the particular category in which your site fits into and place it there. Sometimes you may not find an exact match that is alright, as it is a DMOZ link.

If you are wondering how successful a DMOZ link could be, then just listen to this. I had a friend who was in the home security business. He spent almost two years in gathering quality links from appropriate sites, creating wonderful topics relating to home security. Not only this, he also used to get directory submissions and was doing press releases. You will be taken aback if I tell all his hard work went in vain in Google for their most wanted phrase "home security".

When I met him 8 months ago, he was very upset; when I enquired he told me the story. I told him it is better to submit the site based on the region where your business is located rather than wasting his time in searching for an appropriate category to place his site.

He then later submitted his site regionally, under the category "security companies". He was a little confused as it was not a perfect keyword match, I told him not to worry about that. He first thought this was also a waste and did it just for my sake. After 6 months, he gave me a call and told me that his site got listed in DMOZ for that category. He was very excited and happy. And just after 3 days he called me, I, myself found his site on the first page of Google, when I searched for the phrase" home security".

Last but not the least, when you are submitting to DMOZ link always try and submit your site to a category that has an editor. As they submit only quality sites, yours can move up the ladder fast. The only thing it you need to be kind and patient to enjoy the results of getting listed in DMOZ.

All the best.
