Mel was right, she did need to grow up, but she wasn't scared of the doctor, god no, quite the opposite in fact.
Sat in the waiting room (Mel made the appointment for her) Elaine could feel herself getting more and more nervous, her leg was twitching and her hands were actually shaking, "I really do need to grow up" she muttered. And then there it was, they called her name. "Elaine Liebermann into Doctor Cooper please". Damn, no going back now.
The thirty-second walk from the waiting room to his office seemed to take at least five minutes. When she finally arrived, she knocked gingerly on the door; "come in" came the soft reply. Doing as the voice told her, she opened the door and stepped in.
There he was. Doctor Cooper. "Good morning Elaine, take a seat", Oh no, how long had she been standing there? Was she staring? "He's going to think I'm an idiot" she thought. She quickly obliged and sat down, "Now, what seems to be the problem?"
"The problem" she thought, "is that I want to do one of two things, run like a coward as fast as I can out of this room and never see you again, or grab your mane of thick, black shiny hair and kiss you until I can't breathe"
As it was she couldn't breathe, he had moved his chair closer, so his knees were touching hers. Realising that he was still waiting for an answer, she summoned up all her courage and spoke "Umm, well I kind of have this cough, I keep umm, coughing"
"Good god you're stupid," she chided herself.
"Okay, just slip your jacket off and I'll have a listen to your chest".
She struggled out of her jacket as gracefully as she could manage.
Getting out of his chair, he stood above her in his six feet something glory, his wide broad, muscular shoulders were shown off to absolute perfection by his pure, crisp white shirt. "Sit forward" he commanded, she did as she was told. He bent over, placing the stethoscope on her chest. "Breathe in" he ordered, she took a shaky breath inwards, "and out", she did. "And again" she breathed in, as she did; she looked up and found herself looking right into his eyes.
They were beautiful, fascinating, kind of caramel with emerald green flecks throughout. They sparkled whenever he blinked, She could have melted into them. She really had never seen anything like them in her life, his eyelashes were long and dark and they curled upwards. She was truly hypnotised by how beautiful this man was. His nose, that some would call big, really gave his face the charm and character that it deserved." Breathe out". "Oh no!" she thought, "How long was I holding that breath for? He's going to think I am so weird". She gave a big sigh, probably not what he wanted but she couldn't help it.
He walked around behind her; her heart was really pumping now. Her head filling with ideas about what he might do. What she wanted him to do. What was he doing? She gave a silent sigh of disappointment as he placed the stethoscope on her back, he didn't need to tell her this time, she breathed in, "and out". She did.
"You've definitely got a chest infection, it's pretty bad, and you've left it so long that it has travelled further down, so it'll take a lot longer to clear up" She didn't care what he was telling her, She could listen to that voice for the rest of her life, his soft, smooth well spoken British accent made her so weak. She had often fantasised about that velvet voice reading her Shakespeare, "Shall I compare thee to a summers day?" She was in heaven just thinking about it. "Why did you leave it so long?" His voice really was as smooth as melted chocolate. "Elaine"
"Yeah?"
"Why did you leave it so long before you came to see me?"
"Umm, well you know I..."
"It's okay, no one likes going to see the doctor", he smiled, a cute, kind cheeky smile that was so friendly and warm. His hazel eyes crinkled at the sides and the scar on the bridge of his nose creased.
He sat back down typed a couple of things on the keyboard, "never mind, at least you made the appointment, eventually" There was that smile again.
He handed her the prescription "You'll need to take these for at least 3 weeks, three times a day after meals"
"Okay"
"If it's not gone by then, make another appointment"
"Okay, thanks" Elaine stood.
"Anytime" he replied, he opened the door before Elaine could reach it, "such a gentleman" she thought.
"Goodbye Elaine"
"See ya"
"See ya? What the hell is that? Oh good one Elaine, I'll bet he thinks you're a real genius now"
"Oh for God's sake" growled Elaine, gulping down yet another glass of water after her fourth coughing fit that hour. "Just go to the damn doctor!" snapped Mel, Elaine's "sympathetic" colleague. "You've put it off for over five weeks now, stop being such a baby, You're thirty two years old and you're scared of going to the doctor, just grow up and make the appointment"
