The ancient Romans referred to the hottest days of summer as dog days according to history books and ancient astronomy teachings. They attributed this hot weather to Sirius, the Dog Star and brightest star in the constellation Canis Major (the Large Dogand brightest star in the night time sky. But did you know as we approach the 10th anniversary, that Port Authority Officer David Lim was on duty at the WTC with his K-9 partner, Sirius, a yellow lab. When the first explosion hit, Officer Lim put his partner in his kennel as he went to investigate.
Officer Lim ran up 43 flights of stairs and aided in the rescue of countless people, just as his comrades did. Luckily, Officer Lim himself was rescued and survived the tragedy, but his partner did not make it. Four months later, when his body was found, all machinery was stopped, his body bag was draped with the American flag, a prayer was said and he was saluted, with the same respect that is given to police and firefighters.
So as we approach the 10th anniversary of the event that changed the history of the U.S., and remember the names of everyone who died in the World Trade Center, Pentagon and in that field in Pennsylvania, please take an extra minute to remember Sirius, who we will all meet someday in heaven along with all of our beloved pets who have gone before us.
