The Dollar Theater - Extending the Life of the Movie Theater

Lowering the Ticket Price Has Given Older Movie Theaters an Extended Life

Tony Payne
The introduction of the VCR and more recently the DVD, plus the extended number of television channels that are showing movies, has led to fewer people going to the movie theater over the last few years.

In many cases people will only go to the movie theater to see a blockbuster movie, or one that has special effects that require you to view it on the big screen to fully experience it.

The cost of movie theater modernization has however not always proved viable, and that has led in recent years to the introduction of the Dollar Theater.

The Dollar Theater is generally an older movie theater, that is often in need of an overhaul of it's equipment as well as a re-decoration, new carpeting and new seating, but which is not financially possible, given the expected number of people who would use it.

So instead of re-vamping these older theaters and charging a higher price to watch a movie, the Dollar Theater has taken the opposite approach and lowered their ticket price to just ONE DOLLAR.

The movies that you expect to see at the Dollar Theater are not the latest either, but ones that have been seen at the better movie theaters for a month or more already, and have been replaced by the next round of movies.

The introduction of the Dollar Theater not only allows the run of these movies in the theater to be extended, it also provides a place where those movies that are not deemed good enough or popular enough to make it to the top rate theaters can be seen.

The great benefit of the Dollar Theater is of course that it's more affordable, therefore they are attracting an audience of lower income families that often can't afford to go to the more expensive movie theaters, as well as those who are supplementing trips to the more expensive theaters with intermediate ones to the Dollar Theaters.

The downside to going to a Dollar Theater is the quality of the sound and video equipment, the decor, old carpeting, and quite often broken seats. It's also possible to find people taking younger children and babies in to watch movies, and so the atmosphere might not always be as quiet as you would wish, but the Dollar Movie Theater is still a great way to see those movies that have finished their term at the posh theaters.

There's still one dollar theater close to here that I know of (it might be $1.50 or $2 per ticket), but I've never taken the kids there. It was run-down even when *I* was a kid!

They did that in Philly with a couple of theaters, but they've since closed down. It's a shame.

We don't have these anymore either. I don't think I've been to the movies in five years.

The Dollar Theaters used to be in our area, but are now gone!

Unfortunately we don't have any more dollar theaters around here. Our cheepest theater is a $4.00 movie theater.

Our local dollar theatre just closed recently. I miss it because it's so expensive to take the family to a "regular" theatre.
