On Wednesday, the rock band The Doors cemented its legendary status with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Of the three surviving band members, only former keyboardist Ray Manzarek and former guitarist Robby Krieger showed up. Former drummer John Densmore did not show up to attend the dedication of the walk's 2,325th star.

Densmore had said that he was unable to attend the ceremony because of an interview commitment to a local radio station. Densmore did give a statement that was read at the ceremony by Jim Morrison's nephew, Dylan Graham.

"It is a great honor to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame...a street that Jim Morrison, Robby Krieger and I traipsed up and down, going into bars, asking if they'd hire a rock band," Dylan Graham read from Densmore's statement.

"It's been an incredible 40 years. Now I'm back with Ray, we're still playing, it may never end," Krieger had said to the gathered crowd of fans.

The band whose dark sound helped to define the 60s is known for their hits such as "Light My Fire", "L.A. Woman" and " Riders on the Storm".

The rock band The Doors was founded in 1967 in Los Angeles. The band dissolved a couple years after the lead singer Jim Morrison died in Paris in 1971 at the age of 27. Since then the surviving members have legally sparred over the band's name.

Jim Morrison's death and secret burial has been the subject of endless rumors and still play a significant part in the mystique that continues to surround him. Many fans and biographers have speculated that the cause of his death was a drug overdose. The official report listed the cause of death as heart failure

In 2002 Manzarek and Krieger formed a band called The Doors of the 21st Century. But they were forced to rename the band Riders on the Storm after Densmore brought a trademark lawsuit against them.

In 2005 a judge issued a permanent injunction barring Krieger and Manzarek from calling themselves The Doors and using any likeness of Morrison to promote a renewed version of the band.

These legal issues were not the first or the only legal issues any member of The Doors have ever had. In 1969, Lead singer Jim Morrison had been charged with several offenses after exposing himself on stage during a concert in Miami. Morrison had been found guilty on exposure and profanity charges in 1970. He died in 1971 while his sentence was still on appeal.
