The Do's and Don'ts of Wearing a Side Swept Hairstyle

The Side Sweep is taking over red carpets. This particular hairstyle can either be very trendy or extremely juvenile, according to the wearer's interpretation. Despite how simple this hairdo appears to be, there are several different ways to wear it, depending on the effect that you're trying to create. If you're looking for an innovative way to make an impact with your hair, the Side Sweep is a simple way to put a new spin on what was once considered a juvenile trend. Here are some things to consider before getting started.

Don't...Place a side ponytail to high on the head.

Beware, that if you wear a Side Pony too high on the head, you will probably end up looking like a junior-varsity cheerleader, or a reject from the 1980's. A side ponytail will look more befitting for an adult woman if the ponytail is low-slung. The same sentiment applies to the Side Bun. Post the bun too high and you'll look like Princess Leia on a bad hair day.

Don't...Clutter the Side Swept look with too much jewelry.

When wearing a side swept hairdo, the emphasis should be placed on the hairstyle. Loading up a pile of necklaces, in addition to overbearing chandelier earrings may negate the sexy effect. Keep accessories balanced so that your "imbalanced" hairstyle has a chance to shine.

Don't...Confuse Side Swept with "Off Center."

To make this look really work, you'll want to make sure that the side swept ponytail or bun really is on the side, and not just "off kilter." The glamorous Side Sweep gains its popularity from its asymmetry. Take that for granted, and the results will probably fall flat (bad pun intended.)

Do...Experiment with curly styles.

The Side Sweep does not have to be interpreted with only a ponytail. Try loading up your hair with lots of wavy curls. And then use hair combs to sweep the curls over your shoulder.

Do...Use styling products to smooth flyaway edges.

Some styles look terrific when they're perfectly mussed, tousled in a carefree way. However, sleeker styles look more controlled when the swept side is carefully groomed with a holding pomade or styling wax. Flyaway edges have a tendency to deflate the Old Hollywood effect.

Do...Opt for a Side Swept Updo.

The Side Sweep shouldn't be limited to ponytails. The Updo is just as fashionable in casual settings as it is on the formal red carpet. Practice creating these styles by separating the hair into two sections (one top, one bottom); twist curled (or unteased) hair and pin it behind the ea, letting the top half cascade over the bottom section. To add a slightly "messy" edge, pull a few stray tendrils out, and let them hang along the sides.
