We first went one night when we were in the process of moving. Too tired to cook, we went in. The restaurant is small, but friendly. We were welcomed right away, and told we could sit wherever we'd like. Taking a seat at a booth, our waitress came to our table to get our drink order right away, and handed us menus. There are quite a few options on the menu. My husband ordered a patty melt, and I ordered a mushroom swiss burger. The kids split a chicken strip meal. But first, we wanted an appetizer. We ordered the fried mushrooms.
The appetizer arrived, steaming hot, and smelled great. The smell was nothing compared to how awesome they tasted. They were fried in a golden batter, and were not overcooked, as sometimes happens with mushrooms. Lots of texture, and crunch. The display was even good. Served in a chile shaped dish, with a spot for ranch dressing. They were so good, they did not need salt, pepper or the ranch dipping sauces.
Before we were even finished with the appetizer, our meals showed up. They were also hot and fresh. The plates had generous portions. The meal our son's split could have fed 3 of us, not just them. My burger was great. It was brown all the way through, which is how I prefer it. My husbands patty melt, he proclaimed was the best he'd ever had. We all went home with to-go boxes that night.
The prices are excellent, and service great. For under $20 including tip, the four of us had a wonderful home-cooked Southern style meal. This restaurant, although small, is definitely noteworthy, and one of our personal favorites. So, if you are ever travelling on Highway 79 South, take a minute to stop and eat at The Dover Grille.
