The Downside to Living in a Small Town

MimiRose
A small town can be a great place to live if you are moving from a big city. In a small town the home prices a cheaper, the crime rate is lower, and the people are friendlier. But there are some disadvantages to living in a small town. It can limit the type of job you can get, places you can shop, and things you can do for fun such as going to the movies or a concert. I have listed a few things I think are disadvantages to living in a small town.

Jobs are hard to find

You don't have that many job choices if you live in a small town. Depending on the size of the town, you have a choice of working at a factory, a fast food restaurant, or a retail store. And when a factory goes out of business the factory workers are all trying to get the jobs available at the fast food restaurants and the retail stores. This causes the teenagers and college students to lose the chance of having a summer job or a job during the school year.

Many small town residents are interested in making more than minimum wage and have no choice but to work 30 minutes or an hour out of town. The long commute to work can cause many people to consider moving closer to work.

Not enough places to shop

The store choices people have can become very boring. Many small towns might have a Wal-Mart, a few grocery stores and some local shops. Residents that are interested in shopping at a variety of stores have to shop in another city.

People are very nosey

This is when everybody knows everybody can be a bad thing. Earlier it was mentioned that residents of a small town are friendly. But sometimes some of them can be too friendly. It just seems like the people in a small tow are much nosier than the people in a big city. Everyone in a small town isn't nosey, but in some towns there seems to be a lot of nosey people. This could be a big disadvantage for a private person. If you tell the wrong person your personal business, you can guarantee other people around you will found out about it.

One type of public transportation or no public transportation at all

Some small towns have cab service, bus service, or maybe both. But depending on the size of a town, there is no public transportation system for the residents. People without cars either have to take a cab if they can afford it or depend on family and friends to take them where they need to go.

Very few public schools

Many small towns only have one high school, one middle school, and one elementary school. If parents think the school system in their town is bad, their only choice they have is to put their kids in a private school (if the town has one) move to another city, or home school their kids.

Not enough fun things to do

Young residents really hate this disadvantage. Many find it so boring to live in small town because there is nothing for them to do. When many high school students graduate they move to a bigger city that has more opportunities and more things for them to do. If people want to do something fun, such as going to concert or to the movies, they have to travel to another city that is 30 minutes or an hour away.

The disadvantages of living in a small town can cause many people to become more interested in moving to a bigger city. A small town isn't a great place for people to live that want to have more opportunities. But many residents of a small town could never imagine leaving because the crime rate is low and it's more peaceful than a bigger city. Whatever type of city you choose to live in make sure it's the best one for you.
