The Downside of a Runescape Membership

Once You Sign Up for This Game it is Hard to Leave

There are two versions of this popular online game the free to play version and the paid to play full version. While some new players may be tempted to sign on to the full version when they first start out they are actually hurting themselves. You shouldn't sign up for membership until you have exhausted all of the quests in the free to play game, because once you sign up it can be hard to go back to the free game.

Many players decide to go over to the paid subscription just to get rid of the banner ads and the get rid of lag that is associated with them. In theory, paying for the full version should lessen the amount of lag you experience in game although there is a new way to get rid of the ad for free. There is a Mozilla Firefox add on for blocking ads now called Adblock (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/10/) this will enable you to use your browser to access the game by going to runescape.com and logging in it will block the banner ads for you. It has cut down the free to play lag by as much as 70% in our recent tests of this add on. It will not completely eliminate the lag since it can still act up when you are in a highly populated area or world.

Once you start paying for membership you will acquire a lot more bank space and it will fill up quickly. If you ever stop paying the five dollars a month you will lose the free space. If you take a member's only item out of your account on a free to play world you cannot put it back in your bank. In addition to that minor annoyance you may find that you cannot put items into your account because your member's items are taking up all the free spaces left in your bank. You can reduce the amount of quest items you have in your account by going to Draynor village and talking to the "wise old man", he will tell you what items you can throw away. This can clear up a lot of space since most quest items can only be used for that one quest. Once you complete a quest you may find that you need it for another, but there is always a way to restore that item back to your account with out you having to store it.

Therefore, if you ever plan to leave members you will have to either sell off all of your member's items to leave room in your bank or double up on all free to play things. You will need to do this so you can leave a placeholder in your bank while you use the item. This placeholder will hold the place in your bank so you can return the item to your bank. Another popular option is to abandon the character leaving everything in the bank and investing in some rare items. Right now, the most poplar investments are Halloween masks, and Santa hats. Make sure you check the price check guide in the items discussion area of forums. If you do this, you will know about what they are going for and avoid paying to much for the rare item. Prices will continue to rise on these items since the accounts that were around during those first holiday drops are abandoned. Then you can set a free account and enjoy working on a new character with out stressing out about placeholders. It's all right to cancel your subscription, just make sure you know what you will have to do when you do.

  • If lag is getting you down try downloading an add on to your browser to block banner ads.
  • The problem with leaving members and still having a playable character is the lack of bank space.
  • Make sure you invest in rare items before leaving the game for long periods of time.
There are more free to play accounts then paid accounts in this game.

Do they (jagex) have any way to tell if we are blocking the ads?

To the "AdBlock" part of this post... You may want to point out that blocking the adverts on FreePlay is against the rules. I doubt Jagex will ban anyone for it, but people should be made aware anyway.
