The Draft: Why it Shouldn't Return

KDub
Over the last few years the cries for bringing back the draft have been getting louder and louder. Is this is a good thing? I think it is not. I have few reasons for thinking this.

First off, if people took the time to look back at the Vietnam Conflict they will see a preview of what a draft could do to society now. If young men were burning their draft cards in the late 60s and early 70s imagine what would take place today. If anything we have become a more liberal country as a whole. I have personally seen what the youth of this country is capable of doing if they are motivated. War protests and burning cars I thought were a think of the past.

Secondly, I am currently serving on active duty and I would have to stand side by side as well as lead these proposed draftees. Leading soldiers who volunteer for military service is hard enough as it is without adding the strain of someone who does not want to be there. I deal the separation anxiety of young men and women almost daily. It is funny that the people who are suggesting that the draft be brought back are those that will not be effected by it. Either they are older than the ages that would be pulled from or they come from upper crust of American society.

Lastly, The number of military members going AWOL is at the highest it has been since the Vietnam Conflict. I work in the Military Prison system and have seen in increase in the number of younger offenders coming to confinement. Though it has not been officially been said, I believe that the added stress of multiple deployments is wearing on our troops. All you have to do is look back at our history to see that prison populations are always higher during war time. When I came in the Army back in 1997 we were just starting to minimize the number of inmates in our system. A good majority of those inmates were Vietnam era soldiers.

I believe that a draft would only cause more damage to our fragile state. We are walking along the razor's edge. On one side is unquestionable patriotism and the on the other is a breakdown of the system, while not perfect, that has kept this country safe for over 200 years.

You said: It is funny that the people who are suggesting that the draft be brought back are those that will not be effected by it.

I say: I couldn't agree with this statement more. Great article! I can't agree with you on cop articles, but I can sure give you the head nod when it comes to the draft.

I absolutely agree with this article. This nation has become much more liberal, much less patriotic, much less responsible for each other. There would be riots if the draft were brought back.

I can't imagine if my boyfriend got drafted. He's such a skinny little thing. I think we'd move to Canada before we let that happen, though. I was already a military girlfriend once (by choice) and I won't be doing that again.
