The Drama Cycle

Jennifer Hammitt

It seems like there is always some drama going on. However, really it is the same drama replaying over and over again. It is like a bad reoccurring story line where the characters may change slightly, but the basic theme remains the same.

First and foremost the pretty single girls will get the attention. Yes, they will be the center of the universe for the evening. Now this does not make the pretty girls bad people. No it does not. The very sweet and caring people. Still the theory applies. People will flock to what society has deemed aesthetically pleasing. Pretty people win out here. Even if a pretty girl is in a relationship, you have a much better chance of survival here.

If you are not one of the pretty single girls, you have a few options. Your plight is much easier if you are one of the aforementioned pretty girls in a relationship, or a girl in a relationship period. You at least have someone to keep you company. The first line of defense is to be so comfortable with yourself that you exude enough self confidence to make you seem strong. The other is to do something outrageous that will get you attention. The final plan is to just accept your role as the quirky friend and call it a day.

Now where you run into another issue is the fifth wheel scenario. So you go out with a group of people. First the pretty people are pulled away. Take away the couples, and then the rest of the group has at least some chance of hooking up. Suddenly the fact that the only thing you are attracting is scary in some fashion becomes a problem. You are either A) infringing on a friends chances or B) annoying the couples and keeping them from doing what you want to do.

Once the cycle has run it's course, the drama starts all over again. Breaking the cycle is hard. It can be done, but only if the circumstances are just right. Until, hopefully you can survive the drama and the related fallout.
