The Duggar Family - 17 Kids and Counting

TLC's New Show Debuts Tonight

TLC will debut its new show, "The Duggar Family: 17 Kids and Counting" tonight. I've seen the Duggar family on the news before and they make me very curious. I wonder why they would ever want so many kids and if they ever wish they didn't have so many. I read somewhere that they are a "quiverfull" family - meaning that they are allowing God to dictate how many kids they will have. Quiverfull families don't use any birth control and some don't even breastfeed past six weeks so that they can resume their monthly period and conceive again quickly. I don't know if the Duggars follow that philosophy strictly, but they obviously aren't preventing pregnancies! (Or else they are really really bad at it!) When asked on the Today Show this morning whether they were done having kids, they said, "We'd love to have more. Children are gifts from the Lord and we'd love to have more gifts." Wow! I don't even know what to say to that!

Still, I think I'll watch the show tonight. Yet, it does bother me that all these families (the Gosselins from Jon and Kate Plus 8, the Roloffs from Little People Big World) are allowing their personal lives to be on display for the world to see. They obviously know that they are opening themselves up to criticism. There are already people who think the Duggars are crazy for having so many kids. Many people think that there's no way each child can feel loved and special - and that the older kids are never given a chance to just be kids because they are forced to be parents to the younger ones. I hope the Duggar children won't be hurt by the criticism of their family that is sure to come - that has probably already come from the specials they've had on the Discovery Health channel and the news. One almost has to wonder if any hope this family ever had of living a "normal life" is now ruined because their normal lives will be a TV show.

I still want to watch, though - if the Duggars want to open up their lives for the world to see, I want to watch. I'd like to see how they do things on a day to day basis and to see if the kids seem happy and well adjusted. Of course, I will also watch because I'm glad I "only" have three kids - and no plans for more. Whenever I watch Jon and Kate Plus 8, I turn off the TV feeling relieved that I'm not them. Imagine how much more relief I'll feel when it's not me who has "17 kids and counting!"

What, Jon and Kate NORMAL??? She's an overbearing b$#@%& and Jon cheats on her. Great enviroment for the kids, yeah, right. I'll take the christian values of the Duggars any day!

I don't know about anyone else but this family irks me to no end. There is page after page of hate website for Jon and Kate plus 8 (which in my oppinion are much more normal) but nothing on this gaggle of back woods hick Jesus freaks.

I love their family. Of course the older kids help take care of the little ones in such a large family. They also may not have as much individual attention as children from smaller families but there is much to gain in a lrge family too. There are advantages and disadvantages to any family size. Although I do wonder how Michelle's body can manage through so many pregnancies, I thought I
would never make it through my eighth.

I've always been interested in big families and the why's. Both my parents grew up in huge families! I will say this though, the Duggars have nothing on my college roommates family. Her mom had 23 brothers and sisters! But the oldest is definitely not close to the youngest. It's almost like they are strangers to each other!

I just don't know how they manage to be so clean, content and organized and financially sound....but there is something creepy about them.

I've seen their shows, and while they seem like a sweet family, I still don't think these kids have a normal life. But, if nothing else is on and I have nothing to do, I will tune in to them occasionally. I especially enjoy their vacation shows.
