The Duggars and the Consequences of Anti-Vaccinating: Chicken-Pox

Mary Thatcher
Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar are well known for their super-sized family of 19 children, but they are also known for their stance on birth control, financial debt (they have none) and...vaccinations? It would appear the family is also against vaccinations, as are many families nowadays, not just fundamentalist Christians, But in the Duggars case, 12 members of the family now have chicken pox.

Chicken pox? Yes, that disease that causes those small, itchy spots all over the body, and can also cause shingles later on in life. Taking care of one child with the dreaded chicken pox in one thing, but Jim Bob have to contend with 12 children who have the disease. Despite the fact a vaccine for the disease was made available since 1995, many still do not believe in vaccinating children for whatever reason, from reputed causes of autism (a theory long been disproved by the medical community) to not thinking vaccines are somehow "natural." To top that off, Michelle is not even at home to care for the kids with chicken pox, as she is in Little Rock, Arkansas, looking after her newest baby Josie, at the hospital there. It is a good thing tiny Josie is not at home, or chicken pox could actually be deadly for her.

Jim Bob may be the patriarch, but if the family is true to form here, the oldest children are most likely caring for the younger ones who have chicken pox. It is a well known fact that the teen Duggar girls have to cook, care for, and raise the newest member of the family. Needless to say, these poor girls are shoved into wifely domesticity from an unusually early age. Given the fact all of these children are homeschooled, they do not even get the chance to go out and have fun, like going shopping at the mall, or to birthday parties. Chances are these children will wind up getting married and having their own super-sized families. That can be a serious strain on anyone's body, mental and emotional health. Photos of the Duggars may seem happy and clean cut but they all seem a bit distant to each other in a way, and not have that closeness presumed by so many Americans. Then you have the problems of why the Duggars deliberately seek attention, having their own show on TLC, and of course, their annual advertisement of their bedroom behavior. What may seem sacred on the surface may seem revolting and even anti-social to others.

Hopefully the Duggar kids will recover from chicken-pox soon, for they should not be punished for the sins of the parents.

I don't blame them, it is their choice. They are raising their kids to be responsible. That's why grown men and woman won't hold down a job is because their parents always just let them have "fun". My son has autism and it's pretty incredible that they have 19 kids and none of them have autism! That's pretty good research right there! And they go lots of places that I or my kids have never went. Why is it that some people can't except when people actually do good morally but all of the people who have good morrals are suppose to go along with everyone else's immorality?

good for them! vaccines are just for money anyway. And its their kids, its their choice if they want to inject toxins in them or not. Oh and that "study" that was done on the link to autism, one result was inconclusive so yeah, may want to try that again. I would rather get chicken pox for a few weeks then have brain damage for the rest of my life.

My sister chose not to vaccinate her son for chicken pox and he got it from a group children in school that had been vaccinated. They suffered far more serious symptoms than his very comparably mild symptoms. There isn't even any proof that the vaccine works it's so new and if it doesn't work or simply delays children from getting it until their 20's then you have taken a very mild childhood illness and turned it into a serious life threatening one.

It's completely irresponsible for them to keep having kids, especially when their last one had such a hard time.

They are just plain weird and I anxiously await seeing one of the girls become a stripper

The Duggar family attends more birthday parties than do most families in America. In fact, they do a lot of fun things that one and two children households never get to experience. Anyone can see that the one thing that is lacking in the Duggar family is fun. There are so many parents that make wreckless decisions everyday. I'm just tired of hearing the Duggars get slammed for creating an atmosphere of love and responsibility that actually works for their particular family. What should we do? Praise them for raising many responsible citizens that contribute positively to our communities and our world!
