The Easy Way to Wear Dentures Confidently

A New Smile with Dentures

Dentures, commonly referred to as false teeth, are used to replace missing teeth in people who have lost several or all of their teeth. Missing teeth can affect your ability to bite and chew properly, besides giving your face a sagging appearance, thus making you look older than you are.

However, the use of dentures is not without problems as technology still cannot produce dentures that will fit perfectly for the rest of your life. And no matter how well they fit, dentures can never replace the biting strength and performance of natural teeth.

New denture wearers often have difficulty getting used to them and will be concerned that they may slip or fall out. Over time, the ridges of the jawbone are naturally reshaped and this will loosen the grip and fit of your dentures. When you eat, a shifting denture can rub against your gums and cause soreness and swelling. If left untreated, it can make wearing dentures intolerable and lead to denture-related pain.

For short-term relief, your dentures can be supported by a soluble adhesive. When a soluble denture adhesive is in contact with fluid (saliva), it fills the gap between the denture and the gum, thus preventing food particles from getting stuck in between. This also prevents food deposits and plaque from staining your denture.

An adhesive also provides extra comfort, retention and stabilization of your dentures, leading to better biting and chewing. This allows you to open your mouth wider when chewing - and smiling with greater self-confidence!

Adhesives do not affect natural changes in your mouth and are safe for daily use. For hygiene purposes, it is highly recommended that you wash your mouth and dentures of all adhesives at least once a day. Soluble adhesives are safe to be swallowed along with food and drinks.

In general, adhesives applied to the upper dentures last longer than when applied to lower dentures. Although adhesives have many advantages, proper denture care is still necessary to maintain the health of your natural teeth and gums, and to prevent bad breath.

Adhesives should not be a substitute for poorly-fitted dentures. If your dentures don't fit snugly, ask your dentist to reline or rebase them.
