Always start off with water or shelter. Add some lemon to both for flavor. These are zero calorie drinks and they help fill you up. If you love soup eat a soup with vegetables and make sure the soup is a broth based soup. Creamy soups are in high calories.
Instead of asking for bread basket ask just for one roll. This way you don't fill up on extra calories of bread with butter. If you are in an Italian restraint ask if you can have some olive oil instead of high calorie butter.
Salads are a great way to start a meal but watch out for the extra calories from dressing. Get it on the side if you must have some dressing. Also, don't pour the dressing on but rather dip your fork in the dressing container. The same goes for tartar sauce, ketchup and other high fat condiments. Condiments can add a lot of calories if you are not careful how much you use.
Think about ordering two side dishes instead of one big meal. If you go to eat in Boston Market you even order three side dishes for your meal. To lower cholesterol vegetarian is the way to go at least sometimes. Just make sure you don't load up on high calorie dishes like sweet potatoes with marshmallows. Also, think about ordering a whole chicken to share and then getting some healthy sides to go along with it. Speaking of sides when you get a potatoes avoid the butter or sour cream. See if you can get some salsa, or chili to top your potatoes with. You might like it plain if you tried it.
If you ordering milk shake ask if you can replace the ice cream with low fat yogurt of sherbet. Order a fruit based smoothies also. Watch for additional ingredients like peanut butter that add calories and added sugar. If you're ordering coffee, ask for skim milk. If you're ordering dessert stick the choices of rice pudding, sherbet and other puddings which are fewer calories. If you must have dessert eat only half, ask for two forks or take home half. How you eating some fresh fruit salad for your dessert, for a healthy change of pace. Fruit can be sweet tasting for that a substitute for that sweet tooth.
If you like chicken eat chicken that roasted and not fried. Also, as you watch out cream in soup watch out in sauces for pasta. Also, eating Parmesan dishes like chicken or veal or eggplant also are fried. Eat pasta with tomatoes based sauce or vegetables that are roasted not fried. Add some lemon to the vegetables for added flavor.
When it comes to eating out your breakfast here are some tips: If you like yogurt order plain yogurt with a melon on the side. Yogurt with fruit already has more sugar then fruit added to it. Order toast with no butter since the egg you eat it will have already been cooked with butter. Order only one piece of toast so you won't tempted with the extra piece. Order turkey bacon instead of pork bacon.
Every meal you have to be aware of what you are eating. Once you get into the habit you will be surprised how healthy eating habit will come as easy to as breathing. Only now when you breathe it will be easier since your pants won't be tight
