The Eaton Hill Wildlife Sanctuary in Sonora Texas

L.E. Duncan
The Eaton Hill Wildlife Sanctuary is a 36-acre wildlife preserve in the city of Sonora, Texas. If you're in the area, it is definitely worth stopping for a short hike or picnic. There are over three miles of hiking trails where the flora and animals are a unique combination of the Texas Hill Country and the Chihuahuan Desert, including more than 46 different species of birds in the sanctuary, making it a popular place for bird-watchers and photographers.

Explore the Indian dwelling replica and the fossils hidden in limestone on your way to the top where the U.S. flag proudly flies. The best way to explore the Eaton Hill Wildlife Sanctuary without missing any of its unique features is to find the six geocaches hidden on it. Learn the history of the Outlaw Trail and visit the Outlaw Camp geocache. It is said that the hideout of outlaw Will Carver is nearby.

Always take lots of water with you. Several water stations are located around the park, mostly for the animals. It is very hot in the summer months and every precaution for heat related stress should be taken into consideration. The trails are kept up well, and some are steep. But the overall rating on the three-miles of trail would be moderate at best.

Getting There

Access to the Eaton Hill Wildlife Sanctuary trail system is through two trail heads, the Dry Devils Trail head (N30° 34.548, W100° 38.759) or the Buckeye Trail Head (N30° 34.430, W100° 38.713). There is no cost to enter the park. Maps of the sanctuary can be found at the sign-in stations of both trail heads and the Sonora City Chamber of Commerce.

A wildlife sanctuary is such a good idea, and better than zoos and cages, which are inhumane.
