The Economy Must Completely Collapse Before Recovery Can Begin
Congress, Wall Street, and Big Business Just Don't Get It
Congress just doesn't understand the basics, credit built this mess and we're all done using our plastic just because we have it in our wallet. Just because Congress wants us to Go Forth and Spend is probably enough incentive to keep every last dime in our pockets.
When's the last time you had any confidence in Congress getting anything right. Now their attitude is throw money at the problem.
The banking industry used bailout money to party, gee is that a surprise. They plan on using the rest of the money to expand their holdings, not help save the poor mortgage holder. And of course Congress is left with their mouths hanging open, you mean your not going to do the right thing for the tax payer?
Now the big three Ford, GM, and Chrysler have their hands out too. In front of Congress the three CEO's couldn't even give a dollar figure of what it would take to keep them afloat or what their strategy would be to improve their situation. All they know is they want some of the loose money that's being passed out.
We have an interesting event taking place, called Deflation. Prices are dropping like stones, Gas is again affordable. Do you see a problem here, E-85 is now more expensive then gasoline in many areas in the mid-west. This creates a seriously negative president. Stations are no longer ordering any E-85 as the market vanished over night. Who's going to buy a fuel that is 1/3 less efficient at a higher price. The good part is corn prices should be dropping which will lower food costs. The negative is the whole E-85 infrastructure will shut down, distillers will go belly up, jobs will be lost. When the price of gas climbs again, and it will because we have only so much left on the planet, we'll be back to square one in the methanol business.
Just the threat of the Big Three automakers going under is enough to seal their fate. Doesn't matter how much money you throw at them, the market has abandoned them already. Nobody wants to buy a car when it's even slightly possible that the company won't be there to back it up in six months. Would you order a house from a contractor that might take off with your money?
Michael Moore is right on track, on Larry King Live he said that the automotive infrastructure should be switched over to building mass transit systems and hybrid's all closely controlled by the Government, without the existing CEO's and management teams.
His view of going back to the days of Franklin Roosevelt and creating jobs is the only logical path. Rebuilding our ailing infrastructure, highways, utilities, electrical grid, bring the basic structure of our Country into the 21st Century.
Before we can go forward, we must go backward. The stock market has already returned to 1997, we need to go back further yet. The rest of our economic system needs to fall back to those levels as well. Once the cost of living returns to a level that isn't pumped up by ridiculous consumerist spending and people once again understand the value of knowing the difference between Needs and Wants, we can start over again. Slowly and on a cash basis. Never to let ourselves be consumed and controlled by a piece of plastic again.

I agree with you that things have to completely collapse before they can get better. Michael has a great point about mass public transport. Rhode Island's Public Transport Authority is about to cut service on 45 routes, and I blogged about how the government should be putting money into public transport, not cutting funding.
