The Edge of Darkness

Steven West
My mind exploded.

I couldn't think.

Clouds of darkness filled my head.

Next, I felt a sudden numbness.

I tried to cry for help.

No words parted from my lips.

Shadows appeared;

Sinister, menacing shadows.

And then the knock.

At first, it was barely audible.

Two minutes later there came the pounding.

"Behold, death awaits!"

"Who are you?" I cried.

"Behold, death awaits!"

"Stop it! Go away!"

"Behold, death awaits!" proclaimed the spirit.

"Leave me alone," I shouted.

Suddenly, silence returned.

Five minutes later, I dropped to the floor.

My heart was pounding.

One minute later, I was dead.

The spectre of death had claimed a new victim.
