The Effects of Hard Water on Your Skin

Shannon Frye
Many people will get really frustrated with their dry skin. They will continue to place moisturizers and different things on their faces in order to try and get rid of the problem that they are having with their dry skin. It seems that no matter what you do, your skin will not seem to hold in moisture. The worst part of it all is trying to figure out what the problem is. After placing so much lotion and items on your face you would think that your face would soon start to hold in the moisture.

What people aren't realizing is what is happening each and every time that they take a shower. They are washing themselves off with hard water. If you have hard water and you have dry skin, this is probably the main cause. If you have a problem with dry skin you will want to figure out if you have hard or soft water. You can test out your water to see if your water is hard or soft. If you have a soft water heater you probably have soft water but have no remembered that you need to place salt into the soft water heater.

If you have continued to place lotions on your face and yet you are still experiencing problems like your skin is not holding in the moisture you will want to try and switch to a different type of lotion. Try to purchase some type of intensive care lotion for extremely dry skin. See if this helps because some lotion will simply not soak into the skin, it will only make the skin feel oily. If you are still experiencing problems you will probably want to try and test your water to see if you have hard water or soft water. If you have soft water and you forgot to add salt, that might be the cause of your problems.

You will probably notice that you have hard water if your bathtub is full of hard water deposits or rust. This is one sign that the water is hard water. It there is always a build up on your shower it's because you have hard water. The hard water has different items such as calcium in the water. This will actually dry out your skin. Hard water also makes it harder to remove all of the soap from your body which means that this will dry out your skin. Make sure that you rinse off very well and if you have a soft water remember to keep up on adding the salt.

I am a licensed Esthetician and work full-time in Dermatology. Dry skin is a deeper issue than just hard water. A person needs to hydrate from within, meaning; drink your daily recommended amount of H2o. Slathering lotion on dry skin that is dehydrated is useless, No matter how hard the water is.
