The Effects of Online Courses in High School

Jerry
If you're in high school, or know someone who may be in high school, chances are that they have the opportunity to take an online course at some point during their high school career. Of course there are other classes that the high school has to offer which don't require the course to be taken online, but some students prefer to take classes online for a few different reasons.

For one, most online courses can be completed online without any additional resources. You won't need anything but a computer with Internet access, for most classes however some will require a bit more than that. The greatest thing about the online courses for some students just happens to be the fact that they require almost nothing to complete.

If you're someone who likes to get out of the class for an hour or so during the day, or just get away from teachers in general, an online course may be the way to go. You might have a teacher looking over you, but you're going to have a completely different experience while taking the class online. Instead of having a teacher scold you on what and what not to do, you'll have simple instructions displayed on the screen on a daily basis. You really can't go wrong or do wrong with such simple tasks and instructions.

Interested in a class that your school doesn't offer? Chances are, virtual online high schools may offer the same class, and you can take it online! I personally was interested in German, and my high school or middle school didn't offer this class. I simply took the class online, and learned just as well or possibly better than I would have learned as if I were taught from a teacher in a class room with other students. The online exercises were more than just memorization, in fact memory had very little to do with my German learning, which is what most teachers focus on when teaching language classes. I personally believe that the educational value of the online German class was much higher than a German class which other schools offer.

These online schools are typically managed by your state. They'll make sure to keep the curriculum up to a standard. They're going to make sure that you're taught what you need to learn, and that you always have the help you need. You're not going to miss out on a good learning experience by taking an online course.

That doesn't mean the classes are any harder than another class. In fact, since I'm an independent person and I don't always need help from the teacher, an online class was the perfect way for me to go. The work is simple and easy, I'm usually done before the hour is even half way over and I have time to do work from other classes

The other great thing about the online classes is the fact that you can easily manage them from home. If you're more comfortable working on the online classes at home, and your school classes in school during the given time and your teachers are okay with that, then do it! Do whatever helps get you through your day, because online classes are great for time and breaking up your day.

Online courses also grant you the ability to take missing or needed credits. If you need to re-take a social studies class over the summer or during the year, but can't fit the time into your schedule during school or around work during the summer, take an online course and make it easy! Of course, if you take the course outside of school time, you'll have to pay for the course yourself, but you'll get the credit and you won't have to worry about ruining your summer or staying after school for hours outside of normal time.

Overall online courses have a lot to offer. You're not going to be withdrawn from your friends; it's only an hour a day. They're a great learning experience and an awesome way to get what you want out of your education. Talk to a school counselor to see what all is available for online courses at your school.
