The Effects on Women of Low Testosterone Levels

Testosterone is as important for men as it is for women. Women with low testosterone levels will experience symptoms although she won't know the symptoms are connected with low testosterone levels. Testosterone levels increase when a woman is taking birth control or during the early stages of menopause. There are many symptoms that are associated of low testosterone levels. The list below includes symptoms a woman may experience due to low testosterone levels.

1. Low sex drive
2. Fatigue
3. Weak orgasm
4. Weakness
5. Not able to complete duties at work
6. Lost height
7. Sad
8. Moody
9. Not enjoying life
10. Lack of energy

Answering "yes" to just one of the above symptoms can be a sign of low testosterone.

There are two methods for women to increase testosterone levels; oral and parenteral. Parenteral is given through the skin or injected. There are many side effects of using oral testosterone replacement including sudden increases in testosterone and sudden decreases within two hours. Once the testosterone is absorbed, it goes straight to the liver affecting many enzyme systems. Oral testosterone can cause liver dysfunction and tumors. Good cholesterol levels become lower and bad cholesterol levels rise. Oral testosterone is banned in many countries except Canada and the United States. Testosterone injections can be safer. The testosterone patch is available and safer to use compared to oral testosterone. The testosterone patch releases the testosterone into the skin and into the bloodstream. Women who are going through menopause may find using the testosterone patch reduces some symptoms of menopause.

Checking your testosterone levels can be done with a simple blood test. Seek a specialist in female sexuality reproductive health, especially if you have a low libido. Some women who have high levels of estrogen do not have a decrease in sexual activity.

Risks involved in high testosterone levels can lead to excessive hair growth, particularly, facial hair. Some women may experience male pattern baldness and deepening of the voice. Muscle mass may increase and women may notice an enlargement of the clitoris. Skin problems may occur including oily skin and acne. High testosterone levels may make a woman feel depressed, agitated, angry, and a feeling of frustration. Women who are diabetic and have high testosterone levels are at risk for insulin resistance.
