The Ego's Burial

Stephanie Alford
The woman's pale face glanced down in sorrow
Knowing that the damage had already been done
And that there was no turning back
Nothing could change the past nor the present
Everything was to be considered as an inevitable tragedy
Her demeanor under the circumstances quite indubitable
Malaise-stricken narcissistic love
Overcome by adoration for another
Made her lifestyle completely change
By putting this person well above all others
Now that her love is beneath the ground
She feels as though she should be as well
With no one around to stop her
She forces the sharp tip of the blade
Through the soft flesh of her chest
Directly piercing her rapid beating heart
She doesn't even grimace
The physical pain being nothing compared to the emotional
Her last breath is heaved as she slumps against the grave
The plot of her former love
Which, in the end, turned out to be herself

I've returned from my little emotional sabbatical. Much better now.  View profile

You certainly know how to reach into a person's head.

Very strong poem. Tragedy abounds in this tale of doomed love.
