The official name of the museum is actually The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities. Being located in the capitol of Egypt the Egyptian Museum has the largest collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts in the world. While tourist may be surprised to find though that some of the more famous Egyptian artifacts such as those belonging to the famous King Tutankhamen are not here but in England because of England once controlling Egypt. However there are a large number of items on display in the Egyptian Museum that were part of King Tutankhamen's tomb.
The Egyptian Museum holds nine mummies which may not sound like many but mummies are fairly rare and nine is many more then you will find anywhere else. The mummies are on of the more popular artifacts on display at the Egyptian Museum. While the Egyptian Museum may not have its famous King Tutankhamen it does have the more important warrior king Ramses III. They may not have King Tutankhamen himself but they do have one of the most famous of his possessions his golden mask.
Besides the mummies there are other ancient Egyptian artifacts on display at the Egyptian Museum. There are many items from tombs such as chairs, masks, and weapons. The Egyptian Museum has some papyri and many stone carvings. Many of the carvings tell interesting stories about the history of the Pharaohs. The oldest stone carving tells the story of the first Pharaoh and his conquests like a comic book without the words.
While most museums will not keep kids interested the Egyptian Museum will at least for a time. Kids will love to see the mummies. The only problem to bringing kids is it might not be a good idea to bring kids to Egypt.
The Egyptian Museum is one of the most famous museums in the world. The museum does not have an great overall collection but it specializes and has the best collection of its kind in the world. If you love ancient Egypt then the Egyptian Museum will be a real treat for you.
