The Eighties in Britain for an American Kid

I Remember Buck's Fizz

Mr. Chip's
When I think of the eighties...I think of Great Britain or England

I think of the Top-Of-The-Pop's on the Telly or the Television

I think of all the cool groups I had a chance to see and hear

Seeing The Police, seeing The Specials on the telly

Man the cats were really cool as they jumped up

And down to the Reggae & Ska music

Then you had the Mods, the punk rockers

We Yanks mucking up the mix with lots of laughing

But we caught on...couldn't beat the music or style of the UK

So I joined it with a fierceness just as I loved my R & B roots

I learned to welcome other music styles and sounds, other flavors

sights and sounds then my same-old-same American roots

When I opened my closed kid mind

I saw how much fun it was to dance to Adam and the Ant's song Ant Music

At the same time the British New Wave scence was amazed at the dance moves

of Shalamar and the Electric Boogaloo

And so I had the chance to add something to the UK when to the dance hall

Maybe the funniest thing now when I think back to those good days in the UK

makes me think about Billy Idol who I'd like to thank for dancing all alone

"Dancing with myself" was such a hit maybe I am guessing if he wrote it

In dedication to the British kids who were not embarrassed to dance alone

So when I think back to my eighties and I have so much more to say

That would fill volumes of prose

After all these years when I look in the mirror though I am not

That young yank kid from days gone by

Just play some "I love the 1980's" music

And the I don't need a partner I just take hold of

The hand of my lady music and the fun starts again.

  • Living in 1980's England
A year prior to my highschool graduation June 1980 in Great Britain, a well known former MTV VJ, Julie Brown won the all UK Dance Contest over tons of very good dancers.
